CGM – Vol 2 Chapter 5 Part 1 – The shut-in becomes a sword instructor for a beautiful girl

It was a sunny day, almost too hot. Feeling this heat, I realized that summer was approaching.

On a day like this, Anya and I are about to start sword training in the garden of [Grand Bahamut].

Anya brought a heavy-looking greatsword which seemed well-used.

“Wil-sama, this is my father’s greatsword.” (Anya)

“It’s an impressive weapon. I can tell that your dad was strong.” (Wilhelm)

“Mnn. He could swing this with ease using just one hand.” (Anya)

Incredible. As expected of someone who used to be a guild master.

Anya tries to swing it as a test, but just lifting it makes her legs wobble.

“Careful.” (Wilhelm)

I took the greatsword from her.

“It’s still a bit too early for you to handle this greatsword, Anya.” (Wilhelm)

“Yes, but I wish to be able to swing a greatsword like this one day.” (Anya)

Anya narrowed her eyes as if reminiscing.

“A long time ago, he used to tell me, ‘If Anya can swing a greatsword like this and defeat powerful monsters, then you’ll be a full-fledged guild warrior.'” (Anya)

According to Anya, it was a story she heard when she was about eight years old. It would definitely be impossible for an eight-year-old to swing a weapon this big.

Or rather, I’m not sure if her dad was serious. This bulky greatsword doesn’t seem like a weapon for women to handle. Maybe he said it on the spur of the moment.

“Would you, the excellent Wil-sama, be able to make me a full-fledged guild warrior?” (Anya)

“Eh…?” (Wilhelm)

Wow, her hopeful gaze is intense.

The beautiful, sparkling eyes of this cute girl are too dazzling for me.

“You see, I want to become a full-fledged guild warrior in about ten more days, if possible.” (Anya)

“Ten days? To become one in such a short amount of time?” (Wilhelm)

“Yes!” (Anya)

Ten days? Before the Lantern sending, huh? No, no way, that’s impossible.

Anya is petite and lacks muscle mass. Maybe she could do it with body enhancement magic? But all the body enhancement magics are too advanced for children.

I want to respond to her feelings, but…

“L-Let’s start by assessing Anya’s capabilities.” (Wilhelm)

I handed Anya a practice wooden sword.

“First, could you try some basic swings with that sword?” (Wilhelm)

“Yes!” (Anya)

Anya swung the sword. Her form was quite good.

“Next, try attacking me using Kenbu moves.” (Wilhelm)

“Here I go!” (Anya)

She spun around gracefully while attacking me. It was incredibly cute. Especially the way her skirt and long hair fluttered.

“Finally, show me your serious sword skills. I want to see the technique Anya is most confident in.” (Wilhelm)

“Understood!” (Anya)

Anya approached me with small hops, one foot at a time.

Yeah, that’s it. This mysterious movement again.

She did the same thing when fighting the Ghosty Mountain Cat. Anya has some strange habits.

Movements like this are incredibly weak.

I easily tapped her head with the sword. Anya’s eyes widened in surprise.

“Anya, what was that sword technique just now? Who taught you that?” (Wilhelm)

“My father did!” (Anya)

Oh, Dad…

“He said he wanted me to inherit my mother’s sword technique.”

Oh, Mom…

As a result, your daughter has picked up some strange habits. Well, I can sense your family’s feelings coming through.

“What’s the name of Anya’s mom’s sword technique?” (Wilhelm)

“I don’t know.” (Anya)

“Huh?” (Wilhelm)

“Sofia-san said she forgot too.” (Anya)

Oh, Sofia-san…

She gives off a reliable older sister vibe, but I feel like she’s unreliable most of the time.

“Maybe Uncle Robert knows.” (Anya)

My dad. I’d rather not.

“They used to go on quests together with my parents.” (Anya)

Seriously… Well, I guess I have no choice but to ask.

Mew-chan popped her head out of the house.

She was wearing an apron and looked cute.

“Take a break mew. Sofia brought some financiers (small french almond cake).” $

“Alright, let’s take a break for now.” (Wilhelm)

“Wil-sama, after we finish eating, could you teach me the simplest hero’s divine sword technique?” (Anya)

“A divine sword technique… That’s something you learn after mastering the basics of swordsmansh—” (Wilhelm)

Wait a minute.

I just had an idea.

For the hero’s divine sword technique, having a heavier sword increases the rotational force and thus the power.

If Anya could learn that technique, and then use it with the greatsword—

Maybe she could be proud of herself for becoming a little more competent by the time of the Lantern Sending.

Anya’s dad would surely feel relieved in heaven seeing his daughter mastering such an incredible technique. That’s why maybe it’s best to teach her that divine sword technique.

By the way, Sofia-san seems to want to learn it too. She wants to change herself, as she can only clear simple quests up to D-rank.

I think everyone’s ambition is admirable. It’s completely different from me, a shut-in.

And here I am, arriving at my own home, the Wondersky household.

It’s dusk. At this time, my father should definitely be present.

As I tried to enter, the soldiers stopped me.

“Y-Young master, you’re strictly prohibited from returning home by your father!” (Soldier)

“This is my home. I have every right to return. I have an important matter to discuss with my father. Step aside!” (Soldier)

Pushing past the blocking soldiers, I forcefully entered the house.

My father was in the dining room.

He had laid out a lavish meal on the table, looking like he was about to start eating.

It was an extravagant dinner with luxurious shrimp, shellfish, meat, and all sorts of extravagance.

“Ah… What a pleasant feeling! My heart clears up when the shut-in is not here.” (Robert)

Yes, that’s me. Hello.

It seemed like my father hadn’t noticed my presence in the room. He was holding a bottle of wine and showing it off to the maid. It looked like his prized wine.

“Hehehe. Do you know what kind of wine this is?” (Robert)

“A very expensive wine?” (Maid)

“Exactly. But that’s not all. This is the wine from the year that Wil something was born. I’ve been keeping it safe to drink together with him when he becomes an outstanding man. But he hasn’t shown any signs of that at all. So I’ve decided to just open it today!” (Robert)

What a thing to say!

I’ve already become an outstanding man long ago!

“Hahaha! Just imagining his frustrated face brings me joy! I’ll drink while enjoying that expression! Now, let’s feast! Let’s all drink together! Today, we’ll have a party!” (Robert)

The maid glanced at me nervously. Not knowing what to do, she gave me a sympathetic smile.

My father still hadn’t noticed me, it seemed.

“Oh! I don’t have a corkscrew. Hey, you, could you bring it to me? No, perhaps I should bring it myself after all. I feel like enjoying the occasion. What a good day~” (Robert)

Father stood up and turned to head to the kitchen.

As he turned around, he saw me with a deadpan expression.

Finally noticing me, Father looked so surprised that his eyeballs seemed about to pop out.

“Aaahhh! Aaahhh! The ghost of my eldest son has appeared!” (Robert)

“That’s too much of a reaction. And I’m not a ghost!” (Wilhelm)

“Eeek! Eeek! Even if you were a ghost, it would have been fine!” (Robert)

As if I would ever become one.

“Father, for now, I’ll hold onto this wine, okay?” (Wilhelm)

I picked up the bottle of high-quality wine.

Reading the label, I confirmed it was indeed from the year I was born.

Moreover, it was an extremely high-end wine. It wasn’t something to be opened on just any ordinary day.

“Ahhhh! My enjoyment for tonight—give it back!” (Robert)

With astonishing speed, my father snatched the wine back from me.

“Hahaha! Who said I’d let the likes of you drink it!” (Robert)

You bought it precisely to let me drink it!

I swiftly snatched the wine back from him.

“Aaaaaahhh!” (Robert)

“I’ll be the one to take care of this wine!” (Wilhelm)

“As if I’d allow that! WIl something, hurry up and give back the wine!” (Robert)

“It’s Wilhelm, not Wil something. And please don’t get so close to my face. It’s creepy.” (Wilhelm)

Father reached out with both hands, getting uncomfortably close.

I placed my hand on his face to keep the wine away from him.

What are we even doing? Let’s get to the point already.

“Father, there’s something I want to ask you.” (Wilhelm)

“What is it? Do you want to know how to get a job?” (Robert)

“No, it’s not that.” (Wilhelm)

“Why not?” (Robert)

“Because my main job is being a shut-in, which is a respectable occupation.” (Wilhelm)

“That’s definitely not respectable!” (Robert)

“No, it is! But that’s not what I want to ask about!” (Wilhelm)

“Fine. Is it about renouncing your inheritance of the Wondersky household? How joyous!” (Robert)

“What kind of ridiculous dream are you living in? Even if I die, I won’t renounce my inheritance for the sake of my eat-and-sleep lifestyle.” (Wilhelm)

“If you’re dead, you better renounce it, you useless eldest son!” (Robert)

Well, I can’t deny being a useless eldest son.

“Anyway, let me get to the point.” (Wilhelm)

“You should have done that from the start” (Robert)

“I was trying to until you kept changing the subject. You were close with Anya’s parents, right?” (Wilhelm)

“That’s true.” (Robert)

“Could you tell me about Anya’s mom’s sword technique? I want to teach it to Anya.” (Wilhelm)

“Who would teach the likes of youuuu!” (Robert)

“It’s for the sake of cute Anya!” (Wilhelm)

“Anastasia may be cute enough to not cause any pain to the eyes, but I’d rather die than see you, who isn’t cute at all, be happy!” (Robert)

“Isn’t that statement too harsh?” (Wilhelm)

“It’s not harsh at all!” (Robert)

What a parent. I should have known better than to ask this person.

I’ll just take the wine and leave.

“Ugh, I’ll come back another time.” (Wilhelm)

“You don’t need to come back! Oh, wait, Wil something. This is perfect. Richard, bring that here!” (Robert)

“Right away.” (Richard)

The butler, Richard, exited the room with a dignified posture, then quickly returned. He was holding a piece of paper and a pen, which he handed to Father.

“Thank you, Richard. Now, sign this paper without asking anything.” (Robert)

“That’s clearly something out of a scam!” (Wilhelm)

Let’s see… What is this paper?

The paper contained a statement titled “Agreement to Make the Eldest Son the Second Son and the Second Son the Eldest Son.”

Is he planning to turn me into the second son?

“Who would ever sign such an agreement!” (Wilhelm)

I dramatically tore up the document, and the torn pieces floated through the air.

“Aaaahhhh! I painstakingly wrote that while holding back tears!” (Robert)

“It looked more like scribbles you drafted in a few seconds!” (Wilhelm)

“That’s not true! Are you doubting your father’s love?” (Robert)

“There’s nothing believable in what you’re saying. Anyway, I’ll be taking this wine with me.” (Wilhelm)

“Waiiiiiiiit!” (Robert)

Oh, I might as well wrap up some of the feast on the table to take with me.

I’ll let Anya and Mew-chan have a taste. They probably don’t often get the chance to eat noble’s luxury cuisine.

TL Notes:

Thanks for reading!

Man, that was a massive waste of time. He should have known that his father wouldn’t just give the information. I guess he did manage to steal the wine back so it wasn’t pointless.

CGM – Vol 2 Chapter 4 – The shut-in hears stories about ghosts

“Wake up already! You should be aware of your role as the guardian of this house!” (Liliana)

“Ugyaaaaaah!” (Wilhelm)

Ah, my muscles snapped.

I rolled out of the bed and collapsed onto the floor in a weird position.

Ugh, I can’t move.

My head hasn’t fully woken up yet, and my muscles hurt.

“Owwww. What is it, Liliana? Can’t you let me sleep in properly on my day off?” (Wilhelm)

Liliana stood right beside me, holding my blanket. It looks like I’ve been forcefully awakened once again.

“Wilhelm-kun, you’re seriously mistaken. Today is not a day off; it’s a weekday. You’re the only one in this city slacking off on weekdays, you know?” (Liliana)

“But even little kids don’t work, right?” (Wilhelm)

“Don’t compare yourself to little kids. You’re a grown adult who’s already graduated from school.” (Liliana)

“Then, I’ll just be a half-baked adult.” (Wilhelm)

“Society won’t approve of that.” (Liliana)

Man, I’m sleepy. I feel like I could just fall asleep in this weird position on the floor.

I snatch the blanket from Liliana.

Wrapping myself in it, I fall asleep.

…zzz.

“Please, don’t go back to sleep!” (Liliana)

“Aaaaaaaah!” (Wilhelm)

She snatched the blanket away from me.

Mou, you’re such a handful no matter how old you are.” (Liliana)

Liliana makes me sit up. I lean back against the bed.

Suddenly, she leans in close, and before I know it, she starts unbuttoning my pajamas. Is she going to help me change?

“Hurry up and become a responsible adult so you can put my mind at ease.” (Liliana)

I rubbed my sleepy eyes.

“Mmm… Every time I see Liliana, she seems to become more and more of a mother figure.” (Wilhelm)

“If you say that to a girl your age, she won’t like it, you know?” (Liliana)

“Your hair smells really nice.” (Wilhelm)

“Don’t sexually harass me so smoothly. You just made my heart skip a beat.” (Liliana)

“Well, as long as Liliana doesn’t hate me, I’m good.” (Wilhelm)

Liliana takes off my pajamas. My muscles are exposed.

Haah… this again…

Suddenly, Liliana’s face becomes sloppy. Ah… Liliana, you’re hopeless.

“Hehehe… muscles. Ah… it’s been a while, my muscles.” (Liliana)

They’re mine. Mine.

Alright, time to get up. Before Liliana starts harassing me too much.

Liliana traces my muscles with her index finger. Eek.

“…Huh?” (Liliana)

“What’s wrong? You suddenly look troubled.” (Wilhelm)

“Your muscles seem worse off than yesterday, what’s this?” (Liliana)

“That’s because I was fighting yesterday.” (Liliana)

Liliana’s eyebrows shoot up.

“Huh? Wilhelm-kun, I did tell you, didn’t I? These aren’t just your muscles anymore.” (Liliana)

“Oh, right, you did say something like that.” (Wilhelm)

“And yet, you let yourself get into such a sorry state. What’s the meaning of this? I can’t enjoy touching your muscles like this!” (Liliana)

Don’t say such perverted things with a serious face…

The cool beauty image I have of you is ruined.

“Liliana, think about it carefully. If you hadn’t forced me to work, this wouldn’t have happened, you know?” (Wilhelm)

“You have a point…” (Liliana)

“Finally, you understand.” (Wilhelm)

I knew that Liliana would understand one day.

“…Not, I don’t understand after all.” (Liliana)

Darn, she didn’t fall for it.

“By the way, what did you come here for today? Just to touch my muscles?” (Wilhelm)

“Isn’t it obvious? Wilhelm-kun, other than your muscles, what else… Oh? Ah, that’s right. I came here for work. Come on, hurry up and wash your face.” (Liliana)

I checked the clock. It was one o’clock. I really should get up now.

“Everyone’s waiting downstairs.” (Liliana)

Liliana took out the clothes I would wear today from the dresser. It was quite a stylish outfit.

It seems like Sofia-san and Eva are here. They were probably waiting for me to wake up.

“What’s going on? Is this a tea party or something?” (Wilhelm)

“Not at all, Wilhelm-kun. It’s a serious discussion.” (Sofia)

“A serious discussion…? This early in the morning?” (Wilhelm)

“It’s already noon.” (Sofia)

I knew that.

Liliana looked at Eva.

“Well then, Eva-san, could you tell us about ghosts?” (Liliana)

“Sure. Let’s talk about the cute ghost named Bagi.” (Eva)

As it turns out, Eva’s profession is a shaman.

Shamans are a rare type of magician who specializes in ghosts and spirits.

Looks like the focus of this gathering is to get information from Eva, a specialist in this field, about the powerful ghost we encountered in the abandoned castle.

Eva made a dark, eerie expression.

“First, let’s start with some basic information. Ghosts are cute beings that become what they are after humans pass away with feelings of hatred or grudges.” (Eva)

Cute, huh…?

“In other words, Bagi was originally a human. Everyone knows about the children’s book1 about the ghost Bagi, right?” (Eva)

I found that picture book in Anya’s room the other day.

It’s called “Crybaby-chan and the Ghost Bagi”.

It seems that the Bagi from the book and the one from yesterday are the same entity.

“There was an incident that led to the creation of that picture book. It involved a sad historical fact that greedy humans erased from history. And the protagonist of that was a young man named Bagi Walt, who was once the kindest and strongest knight.” (Eva)

Here’s the story Eva told:

Once, there was a kind young man named Bagi Walt who was loved by the children of the town and always played with them.

But one day, a nobleman’s little boy was kidnapped by bandits.

Bagi, who loved children, was outraged. He searched for the bandits, fought dozens of enemies alone, and managed to rescue the boy.

“Up to this point, it sounds like a heroic tale. But here comes the tragedy. Kekekeke.” (Eva)

Those bandits claimed they kidnapped the boy on the orders of a noble. After the kidnapping, they planned to sell the boy as a slave to another country.

The reason for such actions stemmed from inheritance issues with the noble who commissioned the kidnapping. The mother of the boy was a concubine, and when the legitimate wife finally bore a son, there was a problem. They wanted the legitimate son to inherit the family estate.

In other words, the child of the concubine became a hindrance because they wanted the legitimate son to inherit the family estate.

The mastermind behind this kidnapping incident was, in fact, the biological father of the boy.

“That nobleman’s father wanted to get rid of Bagi Walt once he knew the truth. So he told the soldiers that ‘Bagi Walt was the true kidnapper’.” (Eva)

And unbelievably, that story was accepted. This happened during the time when the power of nobles was even stronger than it is now so it wasn’t improbable.

From Bagi’s perspective, it was a false accusation. So he wanted to find a way to prove his innocence.

It seems there was no other way but to prove his innocence in court.

There was a chance. The boy he saved was close to Bagi. All he needed to do was tell the truth in court.

The boy was called as a witness in court.

The judge asked the boy, “Is Bagi Walt the kidnapper?”

The boy said, “Yes, that’s correct. Bagi Walt is the kidnapper.”

The judge confirmed repeatedly, “Is Bagi Walt the kidnapper?”

The boy repeated over and over, “Yes, there is no mistake. Bagi Walt is the kidnapper.”

It’s said that the boy was trembling with fear, shedding tears, looking pitiful.

He must have been strongly pressured by his father to abandon Bagi Walt.

In the end, the boy couldn’t bring up the courage to defy the adults. It is said that he cried pitifully.

“That’s how the trial ended. Bagi was sentenced to death for kidnapping a noble’s child.” (Eva)

In other words, he was beheaded. It must have been a bitter end.

Bagi Walt’s final words were reportedly like this:

“I will never forgive you! I will definitely get my revenge! Every single one of you! Not a single child or adult will be spared! I will make sure tragedy rains upon this town!” (Eva)

It is said that Bagi’s face, filled with resentment, struck fear into everyone present, making their knees tremble.

And then, Bagi died.

The following year, during the rainy season, Bagi Walt returned from the afterlife as a powerful ghost. It seems he kidnapped the town’s children all at once.

The saint at the time, along with shamans and knights, joined forces to search for Bagi’s mansion. They rushed to the scene.

However, they found only Bagi there. When the adults asked what happened to the children—

“The children? I ate them all up deliciously. Hahahaha!” (Bagi)

It’s said that Bagi laughed heartily as he said this.

He then reportedly tore apart the grieving adults.

Eva is smiling brightly. It seems she’s thoroughly enjoying this story from the bottom of her heart.

“Kekeke… That’s the end of the story. Wasn’t it a wonderful tale?” (Eva)

Where’s the wonder in that? It’s just too pitiful.

Anya is crying.

“Ana-chan, you mustn’t cry. If you cry, the ghost will become stronger. So, be brave. The children in the picture book were like that too, right?” (Eva)

“But, when I think about how difficult it must have been for Bagi Walt-san…” (Anya)

Sofia-san embraces Anya.

It might have been too harsh of a story for the pure-hearted Anya.

By the way, Bagi, who became a ghost and ate the children, was reportedly sealed by the saint of that era, albeit at a great sacrifice.

The seal was none other than the sword found in the graveyard.

300 years have passed since then. The seal weakened, and the sword was pulled out by the children of this era, releasing Bagi.

“This… It feels like something bad is about to happen.” (Wilhelm)

I looked at Eva.

Eva had predicted that something bad would happen to me.

“That’s right. Wil-oniisan, you especially need to be careful. Don’t forget to light the lamp at night.” (Eva)

Liliana smoothly summarized the investigation report.

It was the first time in a while that I saw Liliana’s serious face. I feel like I used to see this expression often when we were students.

“Thank you for the explanation, Eva-san. We will definitely work together with the soldiers and the church to come up with a plan.” (Liliana)

“Eva-chan will also help. Dealing with ghosts is the duty of a shaman.” (Eva)

“Thank you. We also need to warn everyone in the town. We can’t sit around and wait for the damage to be done.” (Liliana)

“We only need to be cautious for a short while.” (Eva)

“Is that so?” (Liliana)

“Ghosts don’t like bright and lively places. Summer is coming soon, bright and hot. Ghosts return to the afterlife in summer. Unlike the rainy season, they don’t like the summer season.” (Eva)

“But, Eva-chan, doesn’t that mean Bagi’s ghost will return next year during the rainy season…” (Anya)

Indeed, as Anya pointed out, the country should take Bagi’s threat seriously.

I’m worried that Anya might get kidnapped… I can only hope that Eva’s ominous prediction turns out to be wrong.

Liliana and Eva returned to their respective workplaces.

It’s raining quite heavily today, so the members of [Grand Bahamut] don’t have much to do. We’re all gathered in one room, just lounging around.

Considering I’m battered and sore from muscle pain, this rain is a blessing. It’s the perfect excuse to stay indoors without any reservations.

It’s snack time.

I wonder if there’s anything for snacks today. As I pondered absentmindedly, a customer arrived at the shop.

I can see the shop perfectly from where I’m sitting. Despite feeling sore from muscle pain, I stood up.

The customer had a fluttering red umbrella. To my surprise, it was Clara. The red Gothic Lolita outfit suits her well.

Clara was carrying a large basket on her arm.

“Oh-hohohoho! Anastasia, I came all this way to visit you. And good day to everyone at [Grand Bahamut]!” (Clara)

That’s a typical greeting from Clara.

We all gathered at the entrance to greet Clara and Anya’s face lit up like a flower in bloom.

“Wow, it’s Clara-chan! Welcome!” (Anya)

Anya stretched out her arms and approached Clara with enthusiasm. Clara visibly flinched and took a step back.

“Hey, Anastasia, no hugging allowed desu wa.” (Clara)

“Yeah, got it!” (Anya)

“Absolutely no hugging desu wa. Do you understand?” (Clara)

“Yeah yeah, got it!” (Anya)

“Then why are you still approaching with your arms wide open?” (Clara)

Anya happily clung to Clara despite the warning.

“Clara-chan, you’re so cute~” (Anya)

“Are you even listening to what I’m saying?” (Clara)

Anya hugged Clara tightly without reservation.

Although Clara protested verbally, she didn’t seem entirely displeased.

It’s the usual peaceful scene.

Clara, wouldn’t it be better if you were more straightforward? Life would surely be more enjoyable that way, don’t you think?

“Hey, Clara-chan, thanks for coming over today. Oh, want to have a sleepover?” (Anya)

“No-Th-a-n-k-yo-u.” (Clara)

“Aww. How about we have a tongue twister contest?” (Anya)

“No-Th-a-n-k-yo-u. But I’ll listen anyway. What’s the tongue twister?” (Clara)

Anya took a deep breath and began the tongue twister with a determined expression.

“Mew-chan myumyumyumyu, mimyumyumyumyu! Awasete myumyumyumyu, mumyumyumyumyu!” (Anya)

Wait, what?

That was incredibly impressive, wasn’t it?

“Okay~ it’s Clara-chan’s turn.” (Anya)

“Eh? Ehh? Ehh?” (Clara)

Clara whispered to herself, “Mew-chan myumyumyumyu?” as she prepared herself.

Then she quickly recited the tongue twister.

“Mew-chan myumyumyumyu, mimyumyumyumyu! Awasete myumyumyumyu, mumyumyumyumurururururu! …There’s no way I can say that!” (Clara)

Quite a valiant effort.

“Alright, Clara-chan loses. You get a year’s worth of my hugs as a prize!” (Anya)

“I lost, so it’s odd to receive a prize. One more time, one more time.” (Clara)

“Huh? I can’t hear you.” (Anya)

“Quite the convenient ears you have, huh? Ahh!” (Clara)

Anya squeezed Clara tightly again.

The basket in Clara’s arms shook and Anya finally noticed the basket.

“Oh? What was your purpose for coming today?” (Anya)

When I asked if she came for a hug, Clara replied, “Of course not.”

“Since it was raining and I had free time, I made a pound cake.” (Clara)

Clara handed the basket to Anya.

“I made too much for one person to eat, so I came to share it with everyone.” (Clara)

“Thank you! Let’s eat it together with some whipped cream.” (Anya)

“Well, I suppose it can’t be helped. Since Anastasia insists so much, I’ll eat with her. Oh-ho-ho-ho!” (Clara)

I guess she was planning on eating together with us from the start. It’s so typical of Clara to have Anya invite her.

Sofia prepared some tea.

It’s snack time.

After trying the pound cake, I found it to be incredibly sweet and delicious. It was tasty even without whipped cream, and even more so with it. It was of the level that could be sold in stores.

Clara delicately sipped her tea with her pinky raised, then carefully placed the cup on the saucer.

“Now, everyone, here’s a quiz for you.” (Clara)

All eyes turned to Clara.

Clara really does seem to like quizzes, doesn’t she?

“As you can see, it’s raining outside. Yes, it’s currently the rainy season desu wa. So, what comes to mind when you think of the rainy season? Yes, Anastasia, you’re quick desu wa!” (Clara)

“Um, I’m still thinking…” (Anya)

“You need to get in the groove desu wa.” (Clara)

“Then, frog-san!” (Anya)

“Bzzzt desu wa. That’s too simple of an answer~” (Clara)

Clara looked at Sofia.

“The rainy season, huh. The fishmonger said that sardines are in season.” (Sofia)

“Bzzzt desu wa.” (Clara)

She glanced at Mew-chan.

“Personally, I’d say it’s the humid environment mew. My fluffy fur gets all damp and bothersome during this time mew.” (Mew-chan)

I totally get it.

Ah, Clara’s making a puzzled face. If she doesn’t understand what Mew-chan is saying, why did she ask him?

“I get it. Humidity sucks, right? My hair never stays in place.” (Wilhelm)

“Sodane. But aren’t you just getting bed hair mew.” (Mew-chan)

“This isn’t bed hair, it’s a hairstyle ahead of its time.” (Wilhelm)

“That time will never come mew~” (Mew-chan)

How rude. It’s my favorite hairstyle. I take the time to set it every day, you know?

Oops, it was a quiz about what comes to mind when you think of the rainy season. Clara looks excitedly at me.

“The answer is ‘Rainy Holiday’, right?” (Wilhelm)

“Spot on desu wa! As expected of Wilhelm-sama desu wa!” (Clara)

Is it really…? Clara’s quiz answers are always so straightforward.

“Clara-chan, I think ‘Rainy Holiday’ is a bit too simple for what comes to mind when you think of the rainy season.” (Anya)

“Sodane!” (Mew-chan)

“I totally agree~” (Sofia)

Clara looked smug.

“No, it’s not simple at all. When you think of the rainy season, you think of ‘Rainy Holiday’. This is a truly splendid quiz desu!” (Clara)

Well, it’s definitely a Clara-style quiz.

By the way, “Rainy Holiday” is a holiday for children to let loose after staying indoors for so long during the rainy season. So, there are plenty of fun things for them to do. I remember when I was a kid, I used to run around the streets and have a blast.

Then, Clara pointed at Anya, who smiled.

“Anastasia, would you like to compete with me during the Rainy Holiday?” (Clara)

“Yeah, sure~” (Anya)

Anya’s so casual about it. Clara is serious though.

“If I win, no hugging for a year.” (Clara)

“Ah, I can’t hear you, I can’t hear you!” (Anya)

Anya covered her ears. How cute.

“Convenient ears you have there. I know you can hear just fine.” (Clara)

“I said I can’t hear you. Clara-chan, let’s have a good match together.” (Anya)

“Hmph, I won’t lose to the weak guild’s Anastasia.” (Clara)

“I won’t lose either. But what kind of match are we having?” (Anya)

“I haven’t thought about it at all.” (Clara)

Everyone went silent for a moment.

“I’ve got it. How about a dragon race for kids? Wouldn’t that be exciting?” (Clara)

I remember winning that once when I was younger. It’s where kids ride tamed dragons and race. It was fun.

But Anya doesn’t seem too enthusiastic about it.

“Then, shall we make it a competition based on sales from the stalls? [Cosmic Falcon] plans to set up a sweets shop as usual.” (Clara)

“Um, [Grand Bahamut] doesn’t participate in Rainy Holiday stalls.” (Anya)

Sofia reacted.

“Anya-chan, let’s give it a try too. It’ll be super fun~” (Sofia)

“Eh, but what kind of stall should we set up?” (Anya)

“Back in the day, [Grand Bahamut] used to have a stall during Rainy Holiday too. It was a cute candy shop.” (Sofia)

“A candy shop! That sounds like fun!” (Anya)

Anya and Sofia promised to do it together.

“Clara-chan, we’ll make sure [Grand Bahamut] has a great stall that won’t lose to [Cosmic Falcon].” (Anya)

“That’s what makes you my rival. I’m looking forward to it. Well then, it’s a competition to see which stall, [Cosmic Falcon] or [Grand Bahamut], sells out first.” (Clara)

“Bring it on!” (Anya)

Clara looked satisfied.

Anya and Clara are friends yet rivals. They’ll probably push each other to improve and grow.

I envy that. As a shut-in, I don’t have any rivals to push me to improve.

It was nighttime. After coming out of the bath, Anya called out to me.

Anya was sitting on the sofa, welcoming me with a motherly expression.

“Wil-sama, please rest your head here.” (Anya)

Anya gestured towards her own thigh with a gentle pat. It looked very soft.

But I don’t understand what she means.

“Huh, what’s going on?” (Wilhelm)

“Please use my thigh as a pillow. Do you dislike it?” (Anya)

Wha-What? Is it… okay? For a cute 12-year-old girl to offer such a service?

“Of course, I’m flattered. But why suddenly suggest using your thigh as a pillow?” (Wilhelm)

Anya blushed.

“W-Well… I heard from our neighbors.” (Anya)

Oh no, here it comes, the neighbors. They’re the ones feeding Anya misinformation all the time.

“If you want to get closer to the person you like, it’s said that giving them an ear-cleaning after they come out of the bath is a good idea.” (Anya)

Hmm, I see. That might actually make sense.

If a cute girl were to clean your ears for you, there wouldn’t be a guy who wouldn’t like it.

Anya welcomed me with open arms.

“Now, Wil-sama, please.” (Anya)

I looked right, left, behind me. Alright, there’s no noisy, fluffy white thing here. I’ll indulge in Anya’s kindness to the fullest.

I leaned on the sofa and rested my head on Anya’s pure, soft thigh.

Wow, this is amazing.

“T-This… is even better than I thought.” (Wilhelm)

In an instant, I felt like a child again. Anya’s nurturing and maternal instincts made me feel incredibly comfortable. I felt a strong surge of willingness to let her take care of me to the fullest.

Anya’s thigh is soft.

Anya’s stomach is warm.

Anya’s breathing is cute.

Anya’s eyes are gentle.

She carefully cleans my ears with gentle movements.

The earpick’s tip enters my ear. The sensation of Anya entering a part of my body that no one else usually touches was overwhelming. I felt like I was shedding a layer of myself, both as a person and as a man.

“Hehe, I’m so happy to be able to clean your ears.” (Anya)

What a pure-hearted girl she is.

“I’m happy too, Anya.” (Wilhelm)

Ah, it feels so good. I want to stay like this forever. For years, for eternity…

However, such happiness always comes to an end sooner or later. The ear-cleaning session is over. It’s a pity, but I have to let go of Anya’s thigh…

“Wil-sama, please turn to the other side.” (Anya)

“Huh, is it okay?” (Wilhelm)

“Of course it is.” (Anya)

Half of the happiness still remained.

I got up to let her clean the other side.

Ah, there’s a fluffy white thing behind the sofa.

It seems to be twitching its ears and in a very bad mood. Its eyes look fierce. It seems to be stressed.

Well, let’s not worry about it. I’m busy getting my ears cleaned by Anya. Just leave it be. Ah, I want to stay nestled in Anya’s thigh.

“T-This Neet. How dare you shamelessly rely on the young lady mew.” (Mew-chan)

I could hear a deep, imposing voice.

“It’s just one side left. So please watch over there a little longer. Anya, please continue.” (Wilhelm)

“Yes, Wil-sama!” (Anya)

“That’s enough ear-cleaning mew! Why did I have to go upstairs and change the sheets to new ones for this guy? Just go to bed in your comfortable bed already mew.” (Mew-chan)

“Huh, did you do that for a shut-in like me? Thanks.” (Wilhelm)

“I can hear that your gratitude is only half-hearted mew. If you really want your ears cleaned, I’ll do it with this fluffy thigh!” (Mew-chan)

“I’ll pass on that…” (Wilhelm)

I was interrupted by Mew-chan, who lifted me up.

Oh well, I guess I’ll give up. Being happy with just one side cleaned is enough.

But it feels weird to have only one ear cleaned. I guess I’ll do it myself while remembering the feeling of Anya’s thigh and her gentle touch.

“Mew-chan, I’d like to serve Wil-sama if you don’t mind.” (Anya)

“No, the young lady is going to take a bath.” (Mew-chan)

Since Anya couldn’t understand Mew-chan’s words, Mew-chan lifted Anya up and walked her towards the bathroom.

While cleaning my own ears, I speak to Anya.

“Anya, the ear-cleaning was amazing. I want to thank you somehow. Is there anything you want?” (Wilhelm)

Anya’s eyes sparkled.

“I want to become strong.” (Anya)

Her response was immediate. It seemed like something she had been thinking about for a while. Anya slipped through Mew-chan’s hand and approached me.

“The Lantern Sending ceremony is coming up soon, isn’t it? It’s the day of my father’s final farewell.” (Anya)

The Lantern Sending ceremony is an important event where the souls of loved ones are sent to the afterlife.

Indeed, the date of the ceremony isn’t far off.

“I want to become a strong girl by that day, strong enough to give my father peace of mind. I used to be a crybaby when he was around.” (Anya)

Oh, so Anya used to be a crybaby.

The Anya I knew was someone who didn’t cry.

Even when she faced financial trouble, even when [Grand Bahamut] seemed to be on the verge of collapse, even when she encountered ancient magical beasts, she never cried.

I patted Anya’s head and ran my fingers through her hair. Since she was going to take a bath anyway, it didn’t matter if her hair got messy. I stroked her hair without hesitation.

“Wil-sama, your hands are big.” (Anya)

Anya just let me do as I pleased.

Anya is good at being petted. Surely her dad used to do things like this for her.

“I understand, Anya. I’ll help you. With an excellent person like me guiding you, you’ll definitely become strong.” (Wilhelm)

Oh? Anya reacted with a twitch and looked towards the window.

Her face seemed like she was about to cry.

She tightly grasped my clothes with her small hands.

And then I saw something stuck to the window of the house.

“Oh, it’s a ghost. It must have come to play from the afterlife.” (Wilhelm)

But its power seemed weak, like it couldn’t fully materialize, resembling more of a blob. In that state, it couldn’t harm humans.

The ghost waved its hand from outside the window. Anya hid behind me.

“You’ll be fine, Anya. A ghost like that won’t do anything at all.” (Wilhelm)

“But, but…” (Anya)

“The young lady is afraid of ghosts mew. There are always things that people are afraid of mew. Oh, by the way, I forgot to light the lamp today. I’ll go and light it.” (Mew-chan)

“Mew-chan, don’t set yourself on fire again, okay?” (Wilhelm)

“It’s okay, it’s okay. I do it every year, so I’m used to it mew.” (Mew-chan)

Anya was still clinging to me, frightened by the ghost.

I patted her back.

Once Mew-chan lights the lamp, it’ll disappear.

“Ah! Hot, hot, mew!” (Mew-chan)

Oh, he’s burning his fluffy fur again. That guy has a lot of fur.

The ghost slowly drifted away. Looks like he managed to light the lamp properly.

Worried, I went to check the back door, and Mew-chan looked extremely embarrassed.

“Hehehe… muscles. Ah… it’s been a while, my muscles.”

“Wil-sama, please rest your head here.”

TL Notes:

Thanks for reading!

Clara was pretty close to nailing that tongue twister, she just messed up at like the very last word. Also, I thought for a second that Clara could understand Mew-chan.

That’s right, I managed to translate an entire full-length chapter in one go. It’s more like I don’t really know where to cut into parts so I just kept going until I reached the end.

Since this was much longer than usual, I probably made a few mistakes somewhere so don’t mind that.

Footnote:

  1. This is the book that MC read in v2 ch3 part1. I translated it as ‘Buggy’ instead of ‘Bagi’ in that chapter but I’ll change it to ‘Bagi’ from now on.

CGM – Vol 2 Chapter 3 Part 3 – The shut-in is surprised by the ghost-like girl

We arrived in front of the room where we heard the suspicious laughter.

It was evident that something was inside this room.

It felt like whatever is beyond this room is a world one shouldn’t see.

For instance, maybe a suspicious witch conducting experiments on humans, or ghosts trying to curse and kill people.

I sense a frightening atmosphere seeping through the gap in the door.

“Sofia-san, I’m going to open the door.” (Wilhelm)

“Yeah, no matter what happens, I’ll always be with you, Wil-kun.” (Sofia)

“……” (Wilhelm)

“Say something, please! I’m begging you. I really want you to protect me, okay?” (Sofia)

“Well, I can’t help but feel like it’s a line straight out of a passionate romance scene.” (Wilhelm)

“That’s true, but, considering the situation, it’s fine to enjoy it a little bit, right?” (Sofia)

Well, certainly. Sofia-san is pressing against me from behind with her hands resting on both my shoulders. So her oversized breasts are bouncing against my back.

I couldn’t care less about ghosts anymore.

My mind is in paradise. It’s all shining pink.

If I were to compare this feeling, it’s like lying my head on a heavenly pillow.

Someday, I want to sleep with this feeling as my pillow. I think this would be the ultimate shut-in experience.

What am I even thinking about? I’m way too relaxed about the current situation.

“Wil-kun, aren’t you going to open the door?” (Sofia)

Sorry, I was busy daydreaming. Sofia-san’s breasts are truly something to be reckoned with.

“No, I’ll open it.” (Wilhelm)

I swallowed my saliva. Truth be told, I’m a little scared too.

If I were to look beyond this door, I felt like there was a kind of fear waiting for me that would forever prevent me from returning to a peaceful life of a shut-in.

But, I was once a man known as the Hero of the Magic Eye. I don’t particularly like that nickname, but still, what good is a hero without courage?

Summoning my courage, I moved forward.

I opened the door and—

The moment I entered the room, I felt the air ominously stirring. There was something substantial in there. Yet, I couldn’t see anything with my eyes.

The room is quite spacious.

Perhaps it was someone’s private room. There’s a bed with a canopy. It seems like a woman used this room as her bedroom in the past.

Near the bed, there’s a candlestick with a blue flame flickering.

This is probably magic fire. I wonder who lit it. Perhaps it’s the work of a ghost.

I vaguely remember hearing that ghosts aren’t fond of blue fire. Is it because it’s eerie, like both bright and dark at the same time?

“Kekeke… Kekekekeke…!” (Ghost?)

We heard a mysterious laughter. Both Sofia-san and I flinched simultaneously.

It’s coming from the direction of the bed. There’s definitely something there.

I cautiously approached the bed. Sofia-san clung tightly to my back, eager to use me as a shield.

The bed isn’t easy to see because of the curtains attached to the canopy. I’ll have to open the curtains to get a better look.

*Gulp*

I don’t really want to know what’s in there, but investigation is my job, so I have no choice but to muster up the courage and open the curtains.

I grabbed the curtain hanging from the canopy and pulled it open.

I decided to open it fully.

Immediately, a person’s face appeared right in front of me.

“Buaaah!” (Ghost?)

I was startled by the loud voice, causing my heart to skip a beat.

Kyaaaahhh!” (Wilhelm & Sofia)

Both Sofia-san and I screamed and took several steps back.

We kept stepping back until Sofia-san hit the wall with her back. My back was pressed against Sofia-san’s chest. We couldn’t move back any further.

My heart was pounding.

Who or what on earth was that?

Sitting cross-legged on the bed is a girl with long black hair. She was covering her mouth with her hand hidden by her sleeve, laughing sinisterly.

There’s no doubt that she’s quite eerie.

Why is she alone in a place like this? Is she really a living human being? Or perhaps she’s a poor girl possessed by a ghost.

“Um, good evening…” (Wilhelm)

I tried to speak as politely as possible.

The girl reacted. She stopped laughing and stared at us.

Her eyes were empty. It felt like she was peering into the depths of darkness, or perhaps seeing the afterlife.

Her mouth continued to smirk in a ghostly manner.

No, there was something more distinctive about her long black hair. For some reason, it was eerily wriggling. It almost felt like it was coiling around us, tightening.

“Kekeke… Kekekekekeke… Did onii-san and friend come here to play with Eva-chan?” (Eva)

It was a high-pitched and scary voice that sounded like it came from the afterlife.

It seems that “Eva” is the name of this girl.

A black cat popped its head out from the side and let out a “Nya” sound. Its eyes were glowing, which was quite unsettling.

“Um, well, we are, uh, what were we here for again, Sofia-san?” (Wilhelm)

“D-Don’t just leave throw everything to me! My heart is pounding right now!” (Sofia)

Mine too, you know?

The girl named Eva looked puzzled.

“…Did you just say Sofia-chan?” (Eva)

“Hmm? Oh, wait, did you call yourself Eva-chan? Eva-chan, as in that Eva-chan?” (Sofia)

“Are you saying that onee-san is Sofia-chan? Wow, what a coincidence.” (Eva)

Could it be that these two know each other? What a surprising turn of events.

Upon closer look, Eva was indeed a human girl. She seemed to be around the same age as me and Anya. I’m sure she would look cute if the area was brighter.

Sofia-san and Eva approached each other, their hands clasping together fondly.

“Wil-kun, let me introduce you. This is my friend, Evabloom Snowmoon-chan. And the cat over there is Blackie-chan.” (Sofia)

Eva gave a little bow while holding onto the hem of her dress.

There were some peculiar stitches on her dress as if it had been torn with a knife and then sewn back together with thread. She has quite a unique sense of style.

Meanwhile, Blackie-chan greeted me with a “Nya”.

“I’m Wilhelm Wondersky, a humble shut-in who’s indebted to [Grand Bahamut].” (Wilhelm)

I greeted them with manners befitting a noble.

Eva looked back and forth between me and Sofia-san.

“Hey, Sofia-chan, are you and Wil-oniisan passionate lovers?” (Eva)

Eva stared at me intently.

With her hollow eyes, she examined me closely.

“Hmm? Well, he’s not exactly the most dazzling person for Sofia-chan… Are you really okay with him? Sofia-chan is so cute, it feels like a waste, you know?” (Eva)

*Gong*

Even in a situation like this, I’m being rejected… My fragile heart is about to shatter into pieces…

Well, I guess it can’t be helped. This is a path that everyone goes through as a shut-in… It’s all about having the mental strength to accept it, right?

“Wil-kun as my lover? No, no, absolutely not.” (Sofia)

Ugh… Looks like I have no chance.

Just a moment ago, we seemed like such a close couple… For Sofia-san, I guess I was only relevant for that moment. It’s lonely.

Eva seemed satisfied.

“Thought so. Phew, that’s a relief. Eva-chan thought that Sofia-chan had terrible taste.” (Eva)

Please, stop… My mental health is already at zero.

“But you know, Wil-kun is actually a really nice guy. If I were to describe him, he’s like… the kind of person who would gently place an umbrella over a kitten caught in the rain. But he’s also the type who would end up getting soaked himself and catching a cold.” (Sofia)

Isn’t that a bit uncool…?

“Sofia-chan, if he’s such a good person, wouldn’t you think about bringing the kitten home with you?” (Eva)

“Hahaha, I doubt Wil-kun has that kind of initiative.” (Sofia)

Sofia-san, my mental health is at zero, you know. You’re just kicking a corpse.

I’m so done. I just want to shut myself in.

Eva was staring at me curiously.

It seemed like she noticed something and tilted her head. Blackie-chan also tilted its head at the same angle. It’s kind of cute.

“That reminded me of something.” (Eva)

What could it be that reminded her?

“Wil-oniisan, are you by any chance the kind person who gave Eva-chan an umbrella on a rainy day? You got wet on the way back after that, right?” (Eva)

Did I really do something so nice?

Hmm…ah. A familiar scene flashed in my mind.

It was the day I stopped being a shut-in.

Come to think of it, it started raining suddenly that day. There was a girl getting wet in the rain, and I politely gave her my umbrella. I think there was a black cat with her too.

Oh, right. That girl from back then. She was definitely similar to Eva. I remember she said something ominous about bad things happening to me.

“Huh? Wasn’t your hair shorter when we first met?” (Wilhelm)

When we first met, her hair was shorter.

But now it reaches down to her feet. Is it a wig?

“Eva-chan’s hair grows a tiny bit faster than other people.” (Eva)

As she spoke, her hair wriggled and squirmed.

While wriggling, her hair continued to grow.

No way, what kind of constitution is that? That’s not just a little bit faster, that’s ridiculously fast.

Seeing my surprise, Eva chuckled again with a “kekekeke”.

She’s like a ghostly child.

Well, never mind that. There’s something else that’s bothering me more.

“Hey, Eva. Remember that day when I got caught in the rain? You said something about bad things happening to me. So far, nothing bad has happened to me. What was that about?” (Wilhelm)

The worst thing that happened was probably just muscle soreness.

“Eva-chan can sense ominous signs of things that will happen in the future. Wil-oniisan, have you encountered any ghosts since then?” (Eva)

“Yeah, just a little while ago.” (Wilhelm)

“That must be it.” (Eva)

Eva stared at me with her hollow eyes.

She tilted her head and chuckled eerily.

“Unfortunately, it seems that there’s more misfortune that awaits you, Wil-oniisan.” (Eva)

Seriously?

“Eva-chan can tell. The next misfortune will be even more terrifying. For example, someone scary from the afterlife might come and mercilessly snatch away someone precious to you. Kekeke… Kekekekekeke…” (Eva)

She laughed eerily with her hollow eyes.

“Snatch away someone precious…” (Wilhelm)

I looked at Sofia-san.

“Sofia-san… Please do your best to come back if you’re ever snatched away by the afterlife.” (Wilhelm)

“Huh? I’m the one being snatched away?!” (Sofia)

“Is it not?” (Wilhelm)

“Don’t say scary things like that! I-I’ll be fine. Eva-chan always says scary things, but they never come true.” (Sofia)

“That’s because Eva-chan is secretly working behind the scenes to help everyone.” (Eva)

“So, we can relax this time too, right?” (Wilhelm)

“But this ominous feeling that’s following Wil-oniisan seems beyond even Eva-chan’s help. If something happens, Sofia-chan, please try your best to come back on your own.” (Eva)

“Everyone’s so mean… You’re all probably enjoying scaring me.” (Sofia)

Sofia-san looked anxious and fell silent.

The atmosphere turned tense for a moment as if Sofia-san might actually be taken away. What if she really gets taken? I’m sorry in advance. It’s because I set up some weird flag, isn’t it?

Things have gotten gloomy.

Let’s change the subject. We need to focus on the original purpose, our job.

“Hey, Eva, the truth is we came to this abandoned castle for work.” (Wilhelm)

“Work? In this empty castle?” (Eva)

“Yeah, we came to investigate because there were suspicious sounds coming from this castle. Do you know anything about it?” (Wilhelm)

“That must be about Eva-chan, right? Kekeke… Kekekekekeke…” (Eva)

What could she mean?

A girl’s voice shouldn’t echo so far outside this abandoned castle. Even if it’s quiet around here.

“Everyone, you can start moving now.” (Eva)

Even though she says “everyone”, I don’t think there’s anyone else in this room.

But things have really started moving.

What’s going on, this is creepy.

Lots of stuffed animals, paintings of women hanging on the walls, hangers on the rack, books on the desk, wall clocks – they all started shaking at once.

And then, a deep, echoing voice that seems to come from the depths of the afterlife can be heard.

“Wooooooo!” (?)

“Aooooooo!” (?)

“Boooooooo!” (?)

The voice is too eerie, I want to cover my ears. If I don’t, I feel like I’ll lose my mind.

This must be it. This must be the eerie, loud voice that was leaking outside.

No wonder they asked us to investigate. It’s genuinely scary.

Sofia-san came over to me and firmly grasped my arm, sliding smoothly to my side. It feels like we’re a hot couple.

Even though she completely denied any relationship with me just now, is she trying to make up already? Sofia-san, you’re quick to change your mind.

Eva gave a creepy smirk.

“In this abandoned castle, there are lots of grudges from poor spirits who couldn’t move on to the afterlife, turning them into vengeful spirits.” (Eva)

Eva’s eyes turned darker and darker, almost black.

“They’re really pitiful, so I come here every day to talk to them and keep them company.” (Eva)

She’s such a strange girl. I can’t quite understand her.

“I see… Aren’t you scared?” (Wilhelm)

Eva-sama tilted her head at a ninety-degree angle.

“Aren’t evil spirits and ghosts cute? Don’t they look cute to you, Wil-oniisan?” (Eva)

Cute? They’re nothing but scary. Look, Sofia-san is trembling as she clings to me.

Dealing with unseen mysterious beings is just unnerving, no matter how you slice it.

Oh, I see. Maybe she’s talking about their real appearance. Let’s use that magic.

“Materialization Magic, [Foresight Illusion].” (Wilhelm)

I cast it over the entire room.

And there they are, swarming all around. Evil spirits, countless in number.

Though they have human-like forms, they’re fluorescent and translucent. Their eyes and mouths are pitch black, making them quite terrifying.

Well, that was a failure. Even when visible, they’re still scary as hell.

“Wow! Wow! Wow~! Wil-oniisan, you’re amazing! It’s the first time I’ve seen evil spirits so clearly. Eva-chan is happy!” (Eva)

Eva focused on the evil spirit nearby. It was the spirit of a girl about ten years old.

“Hey~ Why did you die?” (Eva)

She asked straight up.

“I died laughing after eating a weird truffle…” (Ghost)

Sad. To die at such a young age for such a reason.

Wait, did she eat a pink truffle? Dying from laughter sounds painful.

“It was painful…” (Ghost)

I bet it was.

“Haha, just kidding.” (Ghost)

Huh? Do evil spirits make jokes?

“I was actually stabbed to death by my stepmother.” (Ghost)

Either way, it’s sad. No wonder she became an evil spirit.

Eva eagerly went around talking to various evil spirits.

There were evil spirits of all ages and genders, but they were all sad individuals. Some had no family, some were betrayed by friends, some were falsely accused, and some lost in political struggles.

Their stories were all so pitiful.

Well, Eva was smiling the whole time. She seems to like those kinds of sad stories.

After a while, there was a disturbance within the abandoned castle.

“Kiyaaaaaaa!” (?)

It was a child’s scream.

A horrible scream. It was filled with such fear that it seemed as if they were about to be killed at any moment.

“What? What was that just now? Is there someone else in the abandoned castle?” (Sofia)

Sofia showed a worried expression.

“That was a scream. I’ll go check it out.” (Wilhelm)

“Wait, Wil-kun!” (Sofia)

“I’ll make sure the child is safe and come back right away.” (Wilhelm)

“I won’t let you go alone! We’re supposed to stick together like passionate lovers! It’s scary so let’s go together!” (Sofia)

“I’m sorry, but it’s urgent. I’ll go ahead. Eva, please take care of Sofia.” (Wilhelm)

“You can count on me.” (Eva)

Leaving the two behind, I dashed down the stairs.

Down and down, through the corridors, until I reached the top of the grand staircase overlooking the entrance. From there, I surveyed the situation.

The first thing I saw was the ghost overflowing with sinister power.

Despite being a ghost, its form was clearly visible—meaning it had enough power to materialize itself.

Its body was pitch black, with a wriggling lower half. Its face resembled a skull, with eyes as red as human blood. Its abdomen and hands were disproportionately large for its body.

The ghost held two girls in its arms, both of whom seemed to be unconscious. So, they had been kidnapped by the ghost.

“Hey, you ghost! Return Olivia and Scarlett at once!” (Clara)

The one who raised her voice was Clara.

Anya was also with her. Looks like the abducted girls are acquaintances of both of them.

The ghost grinned.

“Hahaha, I refuse. Because you see, I’m a ghost who eats children. I’ll play with these kids to my heart’s content, exhaust them completely, and then tear them to pieces with a knife and enjoy eating them. So, I can’t return them.” (Ghost)

What a monstrous creature.

I think I’ve seen enough of the situation, let’s just attack from behind. When children are taken hostage, it’s better to prioritize rescue over fair play.

I grip the hilt of my sword, silently approaching and preparing to strike.

Jumping down from the stairs, I close in on the ghost from behind.

Even though I’ve concealed my presence, the ghost reacts to my approach, glaring at me.

“Sorry for the sneak attack! Release the girls!” (Wilhelm)

“――!” (Ghost)

“Divine Sword Technique: [Thunder Beast Chariot]!” (Wilhelm)

A loud thunderous roar echoes from my sword.

It’s a technique that my swordsmanship master knew. Although he couldn’t perform it himself, he had the knowledge, so he taught it to me.

I was only eight years old at the time, but I easily mastered it, leaving my master with a sense of defeat. Those were some unforgettable memories.

It’s an illusion magic where I extend the blade and briefly materialize the illusion into reality. Then, I infuse the sword with lightning attributes and deliver a powerful spinning slash. By the way, I had to spin myself vertically for this to work.

It splendidly cleaved the ghost in half.

I sheathed my sword mid-air.

Then, I landed while embracing the two girls who had been held captive.

Phew, that ghost was definitely an expert-level monster. If it hadn’t been holding the two girls hostage, it would have likely dodged my sword with precision.

Anya and Clara come running over. Both of them had relieved expressions on their faces.

“Wil-sama is that you? Wil-sama, that was amazing! That was so cool!” (Anya)

“As expected of Wilhelm-sama desu wa! You are truly remarkable!” (Clara)

“Both of you, can I entrust these girls to you?” (Wilhelm)

“We don’t mind, but Wilhelm-sama, haven’t you already defeated the enemy?” (Clara)

If only it was that easy.

I glanced back at the ghost.

Even as it remained split in mid-air, its eyes were fixed firmly on me. It grinned, its face twisted into a smirk.

“Hahaha. You’re strong, huh? Impressive. So there are still swordsmen of your caliber in this era. Ah, my knightly blood is tingling. Hahaha, but you know, I’m a ghost, so I don’t have blood anymore.” (Ghost)

The ghost disappeared for a moment.

When it reappeared, its split body had rejoined.

The ghost spread its large hands wide.

“I’ll introduce myself. My name is Bagi. Bagi the Ghost. Believe it or not, I used to be a knight in my past life. Nice to meet you.” (Bagi)

Bagi performed a knightly bow, a rather polite gesture. He must have been from a noble family before becoming a ghost. The armor he wore also had a noble air about it.

With a flick of his hand, Bagi summoned a sword. It was a long blade resembling a large kitchen knife.

“I’ve been itching for a sword fight for ages. Will you be my opponent?” (Bagi)

“I don’t mind, but I won’t hold back.” (Wilhelm)

“Sure, that works for me.” (Bagi)

We locked eyes, each sizing up the other. In that instant, I made my move.

I leaped forward with a powerful step, closing the distance at incredible speed.

Bagi awaited me in the air, a red aura emanating from his body. I felt his power surge dramatically at that moment.

Both Bagi and I clashed our blades simultaneously.

Ouch… My left arm got slashed. Blood began to flow.

But I inflicted a deeper wound on Bagi. I cleaved him diagonally in half. However, he quickly regenerated.

This was unexpected. I thought this job would be a piece of cake, but I never imagined facing a monster like him.

It seemed like this was going to be my first life-or-death battle in a while.

I landed and gripped my sword with both hands.

“Hahaha, impressive. Despite your appearance, you’re quite strong. It’s been 300 years since I woke up from my seal, and I haven’t encountered a master like you.” (Bagi)

He had the nerve to say that after injuring me.

Bagi looked at me with eyes filled with intense hatred.

Ghosts often harbor strong grudges after passing to the afterlife. He seemed to carry an exceptionally heavy one.

“Oh, I want to make you regret it.” (Bagi)

“Regret it? Isn’t it more like you want to scare me, being a ghost and all?” (Wilhelm)

“I want to make you regret it. I’m a ghost who eats children and makes adults regret.” (Bagi)

What a despicable ghost.

“Anyway, I’ll take off for today. When the time comes for the afterlife to get closer, we’ll meet again. It’s more convenient for me at that time. When it happens, I’ll snatch and eat a child right in front of you, making you regret it to the fullest.” (Bagi)

“I won’t let you do that.” (Wilhelm)

“Stop me? Impossible. Humans can’t stop ghosts. Well then, bye-bye. I’ll find a cozy bed and leisurely wait for the day of our rematch.” (Bagi)

Indeed. It’s certainly difficult to stop a ghost. It’s drifted so far away now that I can’t even sense its presence.

Phew… My wounds are quite deep. The bleeding won’t stop. Maybe it’s for the best that the fight didn’t continue here. I’m not in a condition to battle, especially not against an opponent like this, after just recovering from muscle soreness.

Sofia and Eva descend the stairs. They look worried when they see my wounds.

“Are you okay, Wil-oniisan?” (Eva)

“Yeah… Hey, Eva.” (Wilhelm)

Eva looks at me with vacant eyes.

“It must have been that ghost, right? The one in your bad omen.” (Wilhelm)

Eva’s expression turns fearful.

“Highly likely. That was the strongest ghost Eva-chan ever seen.” (Eva)

“Yeah. It said it kidnaps children. I’m indebted to [Grand Bahamut], so—” (Wilhelm)

Eva and I glance at Anya. If someone were to be kidnapped by the ghost, it would only be Anya.

Anya looks at Eva with cautious eyes, probably frightened by Eva’s expression.

However, she seems to notice something and softens her expression.

“Oh? You’re Eva-chan, right? The granddaughter of Bones Magic Shop?” (Anya)

Bones Magic Shop? Oh, Frankie-san’s granddaughter, I see.

“Yeah, it’s been a while, Ana-chan, Clara-chan.” (Eva)

“Wow, you’re back from your training, right? I’m so glad to see you again!” (Anya)

Anya hugged Eva tightly. Eva hugged her back just as tightly.

“Ana-chan, you’re still so small.” (Eva)

“Eva-chan, you’ve grown taller!” (Anya)

I looked at Clara.

“Clara, aren’t you going to go and join in on the hug?” (Wilhelm)

She pouted.

“I don’t engage in such childish behavior.” (Clara)

That’s so like Clara, or so I thought. But isn’t she quite restless? Maybe she actually does want to join in?

TL Notes:

Thanks for reading!

Well, a lot of things happened in this chapter. Somehow, everyone is acquainted with Eva, and it looks like there’s more to her story at the end. And yes, she speaks in third-person.

I was thinking that maybe MC could have killed him, but he did say before that boys weren’t taught purification magic so idk.

CGM – Vol 2 Chapter 3 Part 2 – The shut-in is surprised by the ghost-like girl

[Anya’s PoV?!]

The Sunday school at the church ended in the morning.

In the afternoon, I went to the chapel and sang with the saint. We sang various songs, such as hymns, children’s songs, and requiems.

I, Anastasia, love singing, so it was a lot of fun.

“Anastasia-san.” (Saint)

Saint-sama, dressed in a white habit1, called out to me.

She’s a beautiful, kind woman with long hair and she’s about the same age as Wil-sama.

“Thanks to the medicine you gave me, my throat is feeling much better. I’m really grateful for it so thank you very much.” (Saint)

“Don’t mention it. I’m glad Saint-sama’s singing voice has returned.” (Anya)

“Well, I tend to sing a lot during this time of the year so it really helped.” (Saint)

“There are indeed many singing events around this time. If Saint-sama couldn’t sing, everyone would be troubled.” (Anya)

“That’s true, I don’t want to trouble them just because of this.” (Saint)

While talking to Saint-sama, Clara-chan approached us. She looks very cute in her black gothic lolita dress.

“Oh-ho-ho-ho! Please excuse me for interrupting your conversation. Anastasia, may I have a moment of your time?” (Clara)

“Sure, what is it?” (Anya)

“After this, you’re going to visit the graves, right? If you really insist, I wouldn’t mind accompanying you desu wa. How does that sound?” (Clara)

Clara-chan asked while fiddling with her vertically rolled hair.

It’s a rare invitation coming from Clara-chan, who usually keeps a tsundere attitude. She’s not the type to suggest something so straightforwardly.

Before I could answer, children came running to us from behind Clara-chan.

“Anya, Anya, let’s play together!” (Child)

It was Daniel-kun, the always energetic boy with brown skin, who invited me.

There are many other children too, five in total including boys and girls. They range from seven to nine years old, a little younger than me.

“Hey, I was the one who invited Anastasia first!” (Clara)

“Huh, was that an invitation…?” (Daniel)

“I didn’t invite her, but I was planning to have Anastasia invite me. Isn’t that obvious?” (Clara)

“I don’t really get what Clara is saying…” (Daniel)

It seems Daniel-kun still doesn’t quite understand Clara-chan.

From Clara-chan’s perspective, her earlier words were practically saying, “Let’s go together.” I understand this well because I’ve known her for a long time.

“Clara-chan, let’s go visit the graves together.” (Anya)

“W-Well, I suppose it can’t be helped desu wa. If Anastasia insists, then I wouldn’t mind accompanying you desu wa. Oh-ho-ho-ho!” (Saint)

Clara-chan seems happy.

“After visiting the graves, let’s play together, everyone. I have some work, so it’ll only be for a short while.” (Anya)

“Okay!” (Children)

The children happily agreed.

“Saint-sama, we’ll take our leave now.” (Anya)

“Yes, be sure to play nicely together. Oh, that’s right. Near the graves, there’s a sealed sword, never pull it out under any circumstances. Daniel-san, David-san, John-san, this isn’t a joke, okay? The seal is weakening. Until the adults take measures, even touching the sword is prohibited, okay?” (Saint)

“Why are you only telling the boys…” (Daniel)

Daniel-kun and the others seemed disgruntled. Looks like Saint-sama is particularly worried about the boys causing trouble.

Ahhhhh!

Unfortunately, Saint-sama’s concerns became an inevitable flag.

In other words, someone pulled out the sealed sword near the graves.

But it wasn’t the boys who did it. It was seven-year-old Scarlett-chan, a cute girl with a red ponytail.

I should have properly warned the girls too.

Scarlett-chan may be small, but she’s from a demon race, so she’s quite strong. She effortlessly pulled out the sealed sword.

“What are you doingggggg!” (Clara)

“Huh? But, the sword told me to pull it out.” (Scarlett)

“I didn’t hear any such incomprehensible voice!” (Clara)

Perhaps it was because Scarlett-chan possessed strong magic power that she was the only one who heard it.

Clara-chan hurriedly put the sealed sword back into its hole. But it seems that it was too late.

Something black and large flew out from the sword.

“Ahahaha. Ahahahahaha. Thank you very much for releasing me from the long seal!” (?)

Despite the cheerful tone, there’s something terrifyingly filled with hatred in the voice.

Before we knew it, dark clouds had appeared in the sky.

In that gloomy sky, something released from the seal is floating.

It’s something with a completely black body clad in knight armor…

Is that thing wearing a skull mask? Or is that its actual face?

Its blood-red eyes looked down on us.

“So, you’re the ones who set me free! Such adorable little ones. A-ha-ha-ha-ha!” (?)

With its enormous mouth, it gave us a smile.

I couldn’t help but feel instinctual fear at that large mouth.

“Now, how about you guys play with me?” (?)

It spreads its arms out joyfully.

“After we’ve played to our hearts’ content, then I’ll devour each and every one of you slowly―” (?)

Lightning flashed and thunder roared.

In the evil entity’s red eyes, there was a strong color of hatred.

[Wilhelm’s PoV]

The sky had an unnervingly orange shade, almost red. It was eerie.

Honestly, I didn’t want to come to the abandoned castle at this time of dusk, but it’s for work, so there’s no helping it.

We have to clear the quest “Investigate the mysterious sounds and voices coming from the abandoned castle”, requested by Liliana.

By the way, the quest difficulty is set at D. Since the castle is in the city, the risk of dangerous monsters appearing is low, or so they judged.

That’s why the reward is a bit disappointing.

It’s only 3000 gold for the investigation, and 6000 gold if we solve the mystery. I wish we could get a bit more for our work.

Oh, and Sofia-san is also here with me. She decided to tag along because it sounded interesting.

“Wow, Wil-kun, the evening atmosphere in the castle is kind of intense, isn’t it?” (Sofia)

“Yeah, it certainly feels like something is about to happen.” (Wilhelm)

“I know right? Oh, there are lots of bats here!” (Sofia)

Indeed. There are unusually large bats hanging around all over the place.

They’re staring at us and grinning. It really feels like there’s something here.

By the way, this abandoned castle used to be owned by relatives of the royal family. But now, with no heirs, nobody lives here.

It’s small for a castle, and the design isn’t great either. That’s why it’s scheduled for demolition eventually.

Apparently, eerie voices and noises are heard from this abandoned castle at night. It’s our job to figure out the cause of these mysterious sounds.

It could be ghosts, or maybe spirits. Perhaps thieves have taken up residence, or it could just be the sound of the wind.

In any case, the nearby residents are probably uneasy.

This place is close to the church, and there’s quite a bit of foot traffic too.

Let’s investigate thoroughly to ensure that nothing dangerous is lurking around.

Oh? Something cold just dropped onto my nose out of nowhere. Looking up, I see dark clouds looming closer in the sky.

Suddenly, there was a flash of lightning followed by a loud clap of thunder.

“Uwah! Lightning! That was pretty nearby, wasn’t it?” (Wilhelm)

But more importantly, I feel like I saw a figure at the abandoned castle.

“Sofia-san, didn’t you see someone behind the window on the fourth floor just now?” (Wilhelm)

“Huh, no way. There’s no one there.” (Sofia)

“They’re not there anymore… Oh no, it looks like it’s going to rain. Let’s run to the castle.” (Wilhelm)

I didn’t bring an umbrella because I didn’t expect it to rain today.

Sofia-san and I hurriedly dashed towards the castle.

We opened the tall door and stepped inside.

It was dim. And I could feel the stale and damp surroundings. There was no sign of anyone living here. It felt exactly like how a place should be after being abandoned for years.

“We’re coming in~. Looks like the door wasn’t locked.” (Wilhelm)

“It seems the lock was broken by mischief-makers decades ago.” (Sofia)

“Uwah, how careless.” (Wilhelm)

A cold draft passed through my clothes. I shivered involuntarily.

“It sure is cold in here.” (Sofia)

As I was about to say, “Yes, it is”, a dull sound echoed, and the door closed by itself. The outside light was blocked, and it became quite dark.

“Sofia-san, did you close the door?” (Wilhelm)

“Huh? Wasn’t it you, Wil-kun?” (Sofia)

“No, it wasn’t. I thought it was you…” (Wilhelm)

Well then, it must be some kind of ghost.

I made eye contact with Sofia-san.

She smiled. Sofia-san reached out to me. She grabbed my arm firmly.

“Alright, Wil-kun, lead the way.” (Sofia)

“Hey, Sofia-san? Are you, by any chance, scared of ghosts?” (Wilhelm)

“Mmm, I’m not scared at all! Could it be that you’re the one who’s scared, Wil-kun? Is that why you’re asking?” (Sofia)

Aha, so Sofia-san is scared. And not just scared, she’s really scared. I guess she’s not good with ghosts or anything spooky.

And yet, she still decided to accompany me on this job. Must be one of those “curiosity killed the cat” types.

“I’m not scared of ghosts at all.” (Wilhelm)

“Really? Can onee-san trust you?” (Sofia)

“If push comes to shove, I’ll break through the window and make a run for it.” (Wilhelm)

“Can you really do it without being scared?” (Sofia)

“After I run away, Sofia-san will bravely fight the ghosts and hold them off on her own!” (Wilhelm)

“Hey, Wil-kun. Don’t you dare leave me behind. I mean it.” (Sofia)

“I know, I know. I was just kidding. You’re really brave, Sofia-san.” (Wilhelm)

“It’s not a joke! I’m serious about this!” (Sofia)

Sofia-san smiled and then joked—

“If you leave me behind in a place like this, I’ll come back and haunt you.” (Sofia)

…Or so she says but I couldn’t help but think she’d make a cute ghost.

Anyway, it’s dark. Can’t see where I’m going.

We brought a lamp, so I might as well light it up.

I ignited the lamp with a fire spell.

Then, it felt like something faintly fluorescent and transparent drifted away from around us. I followed its path with my eyes, but there was nothing there after it was gone.

Well, must’ve been my imagination. Let’s move forward.

We proceeded slowly, relying on the warm light of the lamp. And then, suddenly…

“Kekekeke… Kekekekeke… Kekekekekekeke…” (?)

From somewhere, an eerie laughter echoed.

“W-Wait Wait Wait, Wil-kun, what was that just now? There’s definitely something here, right? Right?” (Sofia)

I lowered the lamp to my face. With the interplay of light and shadow, I must have looked pretty scary.

“Oh, but I didn’t hear anything, you know?” (Wilhelm)

“AAAHHHHHHH! Quit joking around!” (Sofia)

Huh? Even though there was no wind, the lamp’s flame went out.

“No, no, no, noooo! Why, why did the fire go out?” (Sofia)

“Sofia-san, shall we continue like this?” (Wilhelm)

“What kind of joke is thaaaat! Wil-kun, you’re definitely doing this on purpose to tease me, aren’t youu?!” (Sofia)

“That’s not true at all. Come on, let’s go.” (Wilhelm)

“W-Wait!” (Sofia)

There’s a reason why I didn’t relight the fire.

There’s probably a ghost or something living here. I want to find it and drive it away, but if there’s light, the ghost might hide and never show itself. So, I thought it would be better to search in the dark.

“Oh Ghost~ Come on out wherever you are!” (Wilhelm)

“W-Why are you calling it to come out?” (Sofia)

“Well, of course, because we’re going to exorcise it ourselves.” (Wilhelm)

“That’s not just investigating anymore. I don’t think it’s a good idea for us to get greedy. Ahhh! Something cold just passed around my ankles!” (Sofia)

“Oh, that seemed ghostly.” (Wilhelm)

“Don’t say unnecessary things like thaaaaaat!” (Sofia)

Sofia-san is as lively as ever. With all this noise, even if there was a ghost, it probably wouldn’t dare to come close.

We climbed up a large staircase.

A mouse scurried away.

“Ah, the portrait is facing this way.” (Wilhelm)

“Not looking. Absolutely not looking at it!” (Sofia)

“Look, it’s even smiling now.” (Wilhelm)

“I said I’m not looking at it!” (Sofia)

“It’s even waving at us.” (Wilhelm)

“I really won’t look! L-Let’s just go ahead!” (Sofia)

“Kekekeke! Kekekekekekeke!” (?)

“And also, what’s with that eerie laughter? It’s like some sort of witch…” (Sofia)

The old vase rattled. Something cold passed over my body as if stroking it.  I hear the sound of blades being sharpened from somewhere.

It all seemed like ghostly mischief.

Sofia’s grip on me was surprisingly strong as if she was determined not to let go. We were in the middle of the staircase on the third floor. Feeling like someone was watching us, I stopped halfway up the stairs.

“Wil-kun?” (Sofia)

“Sofia-san, please let go.” (Wilhelm)

“No. I won’t let go no matter what.” (Sofia)

“Are we passionate lovers or something?” (Wilhelm)

“Are you going to protect me like one?” (Sofia)

“That depends. Do you think a shut-in like me is good enough as a boyfriend?” (Wilhelm)

“In this situation, anyone could be my boyfriend.” (Sofia)

“Sofia-san, they’re coming.” (Wilhelm)

“Huh? Who’s coming? Hey, don’t let go. Promise me you won’t let go.” (Sofia)

I scooped up Sofia-san’s waist and jumped down to the bottom of the stairs. A heavy sword swung down right where we had been.

“Whoa, armor? Did the armor displayed at the top of the stairs just attack us?” (Sofia)

“It seems so! Incoming magic!” (Wilhelm)

“Could it be thieves wearing that armor?” (Sofia)

As I put down Sofia-san, the armor shot a fire spell towards me, but it was nothing serious so I caught it with my right hand and crushed it.

Then, I dashed up the stairs

There’s no way that the bulky armor would be able to keep up with my speed. My muscles were screaming, but I ignored them for now.

“Ha!” (Wilhelm)

As it followed me, I waited at the top and delivered a powerful kick to the armor’s abdomen, sending it flying several steps down the stairs and causing it to topple over backwards, producing a loud metallic clang.

“Sofia-san, what should we do?” (Wilhelm)

“Wil-kun, I told you not to leave me!” (Sofia)

Whoa, that startled me. Sofia-san came up behind me at lightning speed. Her legs were fast!

“So, what’s going on?” (Sofia)

“That armor… It was empty inside.” (Wilhelm)

“And that means?” (Sofia)

“There was no one inside the armor. It was moving on its own.” (Wilhelm)

“So, essentially?” (Sofia)

“There might be a ghost or a specter inside.” (Wilhelm)

“I don’t like this at all! I want to go home!” (Sofia)

Sofia-san tried to turn away and leave, but I firmly grabbed her hand, determined not to let her go.

I held onto her as if she were my beloved.

“Please wait. I’m brilliant, so I’ll find a way. There’s a powerful spell of the Demon Lord that can materialize ghosts or spirits. I’ll try it now, so please watch carefully.” (Wilhelm)

“No, wouldn’t it be scarier if I saw it?” (Sofia)

I heightened my magic. My eyes probably glowed red with the excessive magic power.

The armor stood up cautiously, wary of me.

Now, let’s see who you really are.

“Invisible beings, reveal yourselves in the tangible world! Materialization Magic, [Foresight Illusion]!” (Wilhelm)

A brilliant white light spread out from me.

The invisible being, affected by the magic’s light, was forced into materialization.

It had taken the light. Now, let’s see who you really are.

Inside the armor was… a ghost. Its body was pure white, and its lower half was squiggly. Its eyes were pitch-black orbs, and its mouth was large. It was the quintessential definition of a ghost.

“Kyaaaa! It’s a ghoooost!” (Sofia)

“If you react like that, it’s very pitiful, you know?” (Wilhelm)

“That’s not true! Ghosts are meant to scare humans!” (Sofia)

“Wow, you’re really scaredddd! I’m soooo happyyyyy!” (Ghost)

“Look, it’s happy!” (Sofia)

“That’s good, Sofia-san. Maybe you two can become friends?” (Wilhelm)

“As if! Wil-kun, stop saying weird things!” (Sofia)

However, it seemed like the ghost took it seriously.

“Yaaayyyyy! Friendsss, friendsss!” (Ghost)

It happily leaped out, slipping through the armor.

I swiftly dodged to the side, not wanting to interfere with its joy. It was time for the confrontation.

“No, why did you dodge, Wil-kun? That’s mean! Ugh, fine! Purification magic, [Saint Flare]! [Saint Flare]! [Saint Flare]!” (Sofia)

Ah, with the holy flames of the magic, the ghost was purified.

The ghost gave a cheerful thumbs up with a smile and vanished. Goodbye.

Sofia-san gripped my clothes tightly, showing no signs of letting go.

“Haa, haa, haa. Yeah, no more of that. This isn’t the place to fool around, you know? (Sofia)

“Well, setting that aside, Sofia-san, you could use purification magic.” (Wilhelm)

“That’s right. Because pure-hearted maidens like me learn it at the church.” (Sofia)

True, purification magic isn’t taught to boys. Boys get taught swordsmanship and spear techniques by the church knights. It’s a bit frustrating. You can learn swordsmanship and spear techniques elsewhere, but if they taught purification magic to kids, I would’ve mastered it quickly.

“Hey, Wil-kun, let’s go home now. We’ve vanquished the suspicious ghost, after all.” (Sofia)

The armor that the ghost inhabited lies scattered on the staircase. It seems challenging to put it back together in its original place.

I carefully avoided the scattered armor parts at the edges. It wouldn’t be good to trip over them on the way back.

“Heh, heh, heh! Kekekekeke! Kekekekekekeke!” (?)

Once again, a suspicious voice echoed. It seems to be coming from further up, maybe the fourth floor.

“It seems like our investigation isn’t over yet.” (Wilhelm)

Haa… I shouldn’t have come along so lightly.” (Sofia)

“Thanks to you, it’s been fun.” (Wilhelm)

“Huh? Are you having fun teasing me?” (Sofia)

“There’s no way that’s true. Come on, let’s continue.” (Wilhelm)

“I told you, don’t leave me behind!” (Sofia)

We dashed up to the fourth floor.

Illustration of the demon thing?

It’s something with a completely black body clad in knight armor…

TL Notes:

Thanks for reading!

Wow, this is the first time we got someone else’s PoV. Looks like the two events are happening at the same time, but I would assume that MC’s events happened a littler earlier.

Man, I wonder where have we heard that same laughter before. If it isn’t that girl, then I’m a peanut.

  1. Sunday school is a Christian educational institution primarily for children or beginners. It aims to teach religious principles and values.

CGM – Vol 2 Chapter 3 Part 1 – The shut-in is surprised by the ghost-like girl

Hehehe, as expected, I got muscle soreness! It can’t be helped~!

Even when I tried to get up, my body wouldn’t move. Even just bending my neck hurt like crazy! My body was so stiff that it was beyond exhausting.

Guess battling magical beasts without rehabilitation from being a shut-in was a bad idea after all.

In other words, it’s time to be a shut-in again!

By the way, Anya went on a quest with Mew-chan. So, I was alone at [Grand Bahamut]. Not only was I a shut-in, but I also became a loner.

I warmed up the coffee Anya had left for me and drank it.

I sat on the sofa, trying hard to find a comfortable position, and opened the newspaper. It seemed like that was all I could do.

“Hmm, let’s see what the top news is. Ah, it’s already the season for sky whales to come.” (Wilhelm)

It was a common sight during the rainy season.

By the way, sky whales are gigantic mammals that have been flying in the sky since ancient times and as the name suggests, they resemble whales.

They are creatures that continue to fly through the sky using immense amounts of magic.

They come every year at roughly the same time. So, they are considered a seasonal tradition.

“Let’s see, the next news is about the schedule for the Lantern Sending. Well, Lantern Sending always goes hand in hand with the sky whales.” (Wilhelm)

Lantern Sending is an event where people bid farewell to the souls of their loved ones who passed away the previous year. While listening to the song of the saint at the sea, lanterns are released with prayers for the deceased.

It is held shortly after the period when the sky whales arrive every year.

It’s a sad event, but an important one.

“…Guess I’m participating this year too.” (Wilhelm)

I have to assist in sending Anya and Clara’s dad’s soul to heaven.

Aside from what I mentioned, there wasn’t any other notable news.

I’m bored. What did I do to kill time when I was here in spring? Oh right. I used to read books in Anya’s room.

I go upstairs and enter Anya’s cute room.

Anya’s bed is big because she sleeps with Mew-chan.

I check the bookshelf to see if there’s anything interesting.

There, I noticed a picture book titled “Crybaby-chan and the Ghost Buggy” on the lower shelf.

“Ah, this book brings back memories. I remember my parents and Richard reading this to me countless times when I was little.” (Wilhelm)

It’s a classic picture book for children.

By reading this picture book, it teaches children to have the courage to face ghosts.

The tradition of lighting lamps in front of houses during the rainy season originated from this book.

After all, the story of this picture book involves ghosts coming into the house at night and kidnapping children. It was believed that as long as you kept a lamp lit, the ghosts wouldn’t appear since ghosts dislike bright areas.

…We should be careful too. After all, Anya is cute. The probability of her being kidnapped is probably higher than other children in the neighborhood.

In the end, I decided to find a novel I hadn’t read yet and read it.

This one was about a love story between a commoner’s child and a prince. I passed the time and enjoyed reading the book.

A day has passed, and I still feel my muscles still hurt.

Therefore, I firmly decided to continue being a shut-in today.

Anya has already left. Today, she’s going to Sunday school1 at the church, and in the afternoon, she’ll sing with the saint in the chapel.

Come to think of it, today is Sunday. When you’re shut-in, it is easy to lose track of the days of the week.

I continue to spend my time leisurely drinking lemon tea until…

“Hello~!” (?)

Oh? Someone came to the shop.

I replied with a soft “I’m coming”, and then awkwardly moved to the entrance while enduring my muscle pain.

Why do people always come on Sundays? Today should be a rest day.

The person in question was a woman with elegant blue hair in a civil servant uniform.

“Oh, it’s Liliana.” (Wilhelm)

I felt like I rushed out for nothing. Liliana was a former classmate of mine.

“It’s been a while, Wilhelm-kun. Isn’t the fresh air outside lovely?” (Liliana)

“Well, I wouldn’t know. I’ve been indoors for the past two days.” (Wilhelm)

Liliana sighed in exasperation.

“This isn’t your home, you know. Why don’t you change your attitude and start to work soon?” (Liliana)

I gave her a reluctant look.

“How about this? I’ll help you find a job.” (Liliana)

“No thanks. Are you trying to be my mom or something?” (Wilhelm)

“Huh, do you want to be my child then?” (Liliana)

“No, spare me from that.” (Wilhelm)

If I was her child, I definitely wouldn’t be able to stay as a shut-in.

“Wilhelm-kun, if you shut yourself in too much, your brain will decay, you know?” (Liliana)

“Don’t say such scary things. Even shut-ins are living their lives to the fullest.” (Wilhelm)

“Huh?” (Liliana)

“Even shut-ins are living their lives to the fullest!” (Wilhelm)

“Huh?” (Liliana)

“Even shut-ins are living their lives to the fullest, you know!” (Wilhelm)

“Is that line really so important that you have to say it three times?” (Liliana)

“Liliana was the one who made me say it three times…” (Wilhelm)

Liliana chuckled softly, and I felt a pain in my heart. Ouch, that hurts.

“So, when will you start working?” (Liliana)

“Do I really have to say it…” (Wilhelm)

“Are you still planning to shut yourself in while a twelve-year-old girl does all the work?” (Liliana)

“Ouch… That’s harsh…” (Wilhelm)

Ouch, ouch, ouch. My heart hurts even more.

“So, Wilhelm-kun still has a heart that can feel pain.” (Liliana)

“Hey, don’t give me that pitying look. I’m already suffering enough from muscle soreness. Don’t add insult to injury.” (Wilhelm)

“Huh? Muscle soreness, you say?” (Liliana)

Liliana swiftly circled around the counter and came to stand next to me.

“Excuse me for a moment.” (Liliana)

With just those words, she placed her delicate palm on my chest. Then, she started gently touching and rubbing.

Her touch feels… inappropriate. Stop it.

For a moment, Liliana seemed to have a mischievous grin on her face. Just for a moment.

However, she quickly reverted to a serious expression. She appeared to be pondering something deeply.

Her inappropriate touching finally stopped.

“…Wilhelm-kun, these muscles of yours are in bad shape..” (Liliana)

“Are there even things such as good or bad muscles?” (Wilhelm)

“Of course there are. It seems I have to lecture you.” (Liliana)

“Eh…” (Wilhelm)

Sounds troublesome…

Liliana’s gaze became like that of someone lecturing a child.

“Wilhelm-kun, this is not good. Your wonderful muscles are weakening. How did it come to this? Come on, tell me honestly.” (Liliana)

“Well, you see, it’s because I pulled off an aerial combo on a magical beast the other day.” (Wilhelm)

“Why on earth did you do something so stupid?! Doing something to make your muscles scream in agony… That’s… That’s truly idiotic!!” (Liliana)

Tears welled up in Liliana’s eyes. Isn’t she getting a bit too emotional?

“N-No, it’s because of work, I had no choice.” (Wilhelm)

“Men always just say it’s because of work!” (Liliana)

“But it really was for work. It was a request from the church.” (Wilhelm)

“For someone who’s a shut-in, you sure talk a lot about work!” (Liliana)

“Well, that’s true, but…” (Wilhelm)

“Listen here, Wilhelm-kun.” (Liliana)

Liliana pointed her finger at me with a stern expression.

“Your muscles are like the ideal muscles one can have. It’s artistic, pleasant to touch, and has excellent performance. It’s as if they were born just for me to touch. Please never overwork them for such trivial reasons.” (Liliana)

“Uh, okay…?” (Wilhelm)

Liliana approached me with a frightening expression, tears in her eyes.

“Your muscles are no longer just yours.” (Liliana)

“I-Is that so…?” (Wilhelm)

“Do you understand?” (Liliana)

“W-Well, but… don’t my muscles belong to me?” (Wilhelm)

“You… you still don’t understand anything!” (Liliana)

Once again, her teary-eyed, stern face came closer. This is getting annoying.

“I got it. I’ll be more careful from now on, just as Liliana says. Okay?” (Wilhelm)

“Really?” (Liliana)

“Yes, really. So, what are you actually here for? Did you need something?” (Wilhelm)

In this situation, changing the subject is the best option.

“I don’t have a job other than touching Wilhelm-kun’s muscles.” (Liliana)

“Are you overworking yourself to the point of getting brain damage…?” (Wilhelm)

“Work? Ah right. That’s right. I brought some work.” (Liliana)

So in the end, they’re going to make a shut-in like me work, huh? My muscles are going to scream again. No, I shouldn’t say that. It seems like it would just be troublesome to argue with Liliana right now.

“Wilhelm-kun, you see, recently, something strange’s been happening.” (Liliana)

Liliana made a dark expression. I asked her what was happening.

“And it’s probably related to ghosts.” (Liliana)

Liliana gestured her hand downwards, mimicking a ghost.

“We’ve been hearing eerie noises coming from a small abandoned castle where entry is prohibited, night after night.” (Liliana)

Liliana swayed gently, like a ghost.

“We dispatched official investigators, but they reported that there didn’t seem to be anyone living in the abandoned castle. However, suspicious screams and strange noises continued to be heard from there. The investigators got so frightened that they all took time off work.” (Liliana)

“Must be nice, taking time off from work.” (Wilhelm)

“You say that but you’re always taking time off, aren’t you? Haa…” (Liliana)

Liliana crossed her arms, exasperated.

“Jokes aside… considering the timing, there might actually be real ghosts or spirits in that abandoned castle.” (Liliana)

The rainy season is the time when the boundary between the world of the living and the world of the dead is closest. So it’s common for ghosts and spirits to come from the other side during this time.

There’s a possibility that ghosts or spirits are causing mischief in the abandoned castle.

“That’s right. So, Wilhelm-kun, I’m asking you to help investigate it.” (Liliana)

“You’re specifically asking me?” (Wilhelm)

“Yes. Your father said, ‘If it’s related to ghosts or spirits, leave it to that gloomy shut-in.’ So, there you have it.” (Liliana)

“Father… He never changes.” (Wilhelm)

“Besides, he also said that since you’re a shut-in, if you get scared like the other investigators, you have no work to take time off.” (Liliana)

“Well, there’s some logic to that.” (Wilhelm)

“While I understand his reasoning, it’s still a headache for me… Anyway, please take care of this matter properly. The people in the neighborhood are very frightened.” (Liliana)

Liliana handed me a request form.

The formal recipient of the request is [Grand Bahamut]. It seems like there will be a proper reward for this job, although it’s not a significant amount.

“Well then, I’ll be heading back. Wilhelm-kun, let me touch your muscles again sometime. I was glad to see them today.” (Liliana)

I wished she said she was glad to see me instead.

“Liliana.” (Wilhelm)

I called out to Liliana as she was about to leave.

“Try to take it easy on your days off. Working too much isn’t good for your beauty or your health, you know?” (Wilhelm)

“If you were to become a civil servant, Wilhelm-kun, my workload would decrease. What do you think about that?” (Liliana)

“…Liliana-san, do your best at work.” (Wilhelm)

Liliana seemed disappointed.

Did she really expect me to work? How pitiful. There’s no way a shut-in like me would ever get a job with weekend shifts, right?

TL Notes:

Thanks for reading!

Don’t worry, I wouldn’t want to work on weekends either.

Also, seeing flying whales in the sky would terrify me. Whales are huge, and seeing a flock of them sounds scary.

CGM – Vol 2 Chapter 2 Part 2 – The shut-in tastes a delicacy loved by magical beasts

After returning from Ghost Valley to [Grand Bahamut], where Anya promptly made dinner.

“Wil-sama, the pot-au-feu (french beef stew) with pink truffles is ready. Please, enjoy it to your heart’s content.” (Anya)

Tired of waiting at the table, I enthusiastically helped to assist in carrying the dishes.

I glance at the pot-au-feu Anya served in a deep dish.

It contains plenty of beef, vegetables, and pink truffles brought from Ghost Valley. Amidst the spices, the sweet aroma of the pink truffles wafts through.

It was an indescribable scent. Indeed, it lived up to its reputation as a delicacy. The scent is similar to a fruit… No, maybe even sweeter.

By the way, these were the leftover pink truffles that weren’t used for throat medicine. Frankie-san suggested trying them since they were delicious, so I decided to give them a taste.

“I’m looking forward to trying this. It’s my first time having pink truffles.” (Wilhelm)

“Sodane! It smells sweet like candy mew.” (Mew-chan)

“Ah, that’s what I thought. It does have a sweet scent like a high-quality candy. Apparently, if this was served in a fancy restaurant, it would become a luxury dish worth tens of thousands of gold. Let’s savor it.” (Wilhelm)

Anya took off her apron and sat opposite me.

Now, itadakimasu. Let’s start by trying the pink truffles.

“Hmm…? It doesn’t really taste like anything.” (Wilhelm)

“It seems to have no taste, but you can feel the sweet scent spreading through your mouth.” (Anya)

“That’s true. It’s fun feeling the sweet scent escape through your nose.” (Wilhelm)

“Sodane!” (Mew-chan)

Oh, this might be addictive. I can’t stop munching on it. It goes really well with the potatoes and beef in the pot-au-feu.

It seems like it would have an even deeper flavor when paired with a spicy grape wine.

“Come to think of it, Frankie-san mentioned something about there being a ‘hit’ with pink truffles. What could that be?” (Wilhelm)

“A hit? Is there alcohol or chocolate inside mew?” (Mew-chan)

“I couldn’t get detailed information. He just kept grinning.” (Wilhelm)

Anya suddenly burst out laughing for some reason.

“Hehe. Ahahaha!” (Anya)

Both Mew-chan and I looked at Anya in confusion.

Anya had a bright smile on her face. She’s so cute. But why did she laugh?

I popped a pink truffle into my mouth. As expected, it didn’t have any taste.

A sweet scent flowed out smoothly through my nose. It’s such a delightful sensation. I quite like it.

“Is it really okay for a shut-in like me to eat something so luxurious?” (Wilhelm)

“Hehehe. Teeheehee.” (Anya)

Anya covered her mouth, giggling cutely.

What was she laughing at? Mew–chan tilted his head in confusion.

“Ojou, was the neet’s remark really that amusing to you mew? It was probably the best thing his empty brain could come up with.” (Mew-chan)

Hey, that’s a bit too much. I do have a brain. It’s just that maybe it’s gone moldy from all the shut-in time.

“Kyahaha-ahaha! Mew-chan is saying ‘mew mew mew’! Hehehe!” (Anya)

Anya doubled over, holding her stomach as she laughed. She seemed embarrassed and hid her face while looking down.

She laughed with her shoulders shaking. Cute.

Finally, when she calmed down, Anya lifted her face. She looked a little embarrassed as she took a sip of water.

“Hey, Anya, is there any more pot-au-feu left?” (Wilhelm)

“Bwahahaha! Ahahaha! Ahahaha! Ahahahaha!” (Anya)

Anya burst out laughing again, spraying water everywhere.

“Wil-Wil-samaaa, please don’t make me laugh anymore! I can’t take it anymore!” (Anya)

Eeeeeeeeeeeh.

“What’s so funny about what I just said…” (Wilhelm)

“It’s 100% hilarious!” (Anya)

“No, it isn’t mew. It’s not funny at all mew. Oh, forget it, I need a cloth.” (Mew-chan)

“Why not use your own arm?” (Wilhelm)

“Are you calling my arm a cloth?!” (Mew-chan)

“Hahaha! Ahahaha, ahahaha, my stomach hurts. Please, stop it. If I laugh anymore, I think I’ll go crazy.” (Anya)

Anya looked genuinely in pain from laughing so much. But since she’s still smiling, I guess it’s not that big of a problem.

Mew-chan stood up to get the cloth. In doing so, her fluffy arms accidentally brushed against the fork.

The fork fell onto the table with a clatter.

“Bwahahaha! Ahahaha! Hahaha! Hahahaha! Haha, *cough, cough, cough*.” (Anya)

Anya laughed so much that she started choking.

Mew-chan looked concerned as he put the fork back on the plate. But then, he accidentally moved the plate, causing the spoon to fall this time.

“Ahhhhahaha! *cough, cough, cough* Ahahaha! *cough* Hehehe.” (Anya)

Laughing, choking, laughing, choking.

“You sure are having fun, Anya…” (Wilhelm)

“Sodane. What’s going on mew…? She was always a lovely girl with a beautiful smile, but she wasn’t usually this giggly.” (Mew-chan)

“Mew-chan, there’s only one reason that I can think of.” (Wilhelm)

“Sodane. I’m sure I’m thinking the same thing mew.” (Mew-chan)

Anya fell from her chair, clutching her stomach. She tried to get back up but ended up laughing again as soon as she put her hands on the chair. It was adorable.

“So basically, this is what he meant by getting a ‘hit’ with the pink truffles, right?” (Wilhelm)

It means you get a side effect similar to eating waraitake (laughing mushroom). It makes you burst into laughter like crazy.

“Sodane! Let’s test it mew!” (Mew-chan)

“Alright! Hey, Anya, our futon flew away!” (Wilhelm)

“Ahhahahaha! Ahhhhahahahaha! Ahhahahahahahaha! *cough, cough, cough* Wi-Wil-sama, please, I beg you, stop with the jokes that are trying too hard to be funny, it’s a matter of life and death!” (Anya)

“Huh… but that was such a lame joke…” (Wilhelm)

“Ahhhahahahahahaha!” (Anya)

This is hopeless. Well, she’ll eventually tire herself out.

Oh, someone is at the back door. This presence… must be Sofia-san.

As expected of Sofia-san, the door was opened energetically.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen Sofia-san, and her chest is as large as ever. As soon as she appeared, they bounced. She never fails to entertain my eyes.

Her large ponytail is also bouncing energetically.

“Good evening, everyone! Looks like you’re having fun. What have you been up to? Oh, Wil-kun!” (Sofia)

Anya’s laughter must have been audible outside. Sofia-san came in with a lively expression on her face.

“Ahahaha! Welcome! Hehehe.” (Anya)

“Wow, Anya-chan seems to be having fun! Hey, what’s going on?” (Sofia)

Sofia-san handed the paper bag she brought to Mew-chan and then went over to where Anya was leaning back in her chair.

Sofia-san embraced Anya from behind and gently stroked her chin. She kept petting and pampering her.

“Hey, Anya-chaaan, what are you laughing about?” (Sofia)

“Not under the chin! That’s not allowed! Hehehehe, hehehehehe. Hehe, ahaha *cough* hehehehe.” (Anya)

Ah, Anya seems to be struggling to hold back her laughter. She’s trying to endure it through sheer willpower.

“Something fun must have happened! Oh, right! I got some delicious persimmons. Shall we all eat them together?” (Sofia)

“Persimmons! Hahaha! Ahahaha!” (Anya)

“Wow, Anya-chan laughed! But I have no idea what was funny just now. Don’t mess with onee-san, otherwise, I’ll tickle you!” (Sofia)

“Wait, Sofia-san, hehehehe! Not under the armpits either! Hahaha! Not now, hahaha! Please, read the atmosphere! *cough, cough* Hehehe!” (Anya)

“You’re laughing so much it seems painful. Since armpits is a no-go, let’s try your sides.” (Sofia)

“B-both are off-limits! Ahahaha! Wil-sama, Mew-chan, h-help! Hehehe!” (Anya)

Anya squirms and tries to escape from Sofia-san.

But Sofia-san doesn’t stop tickling her. She seems to be having a great time.

“Oh, it’s fine! It’s fun, isn’t it?” (Sofia)

“At this rate, I might die from laughing. Hehehe! *cough* Hehehe!” (Anya)

Sofia-san affectionately rubbed her cheek against Anya’s and petted her head gently.

Anya, having already fallen too far, couldn’t help but burst into laughter no matter what. Cute.

After Anya tired herself out from laughing, I explained the situation to Sofia-san.

“Heh~ I didn’t know you went looking for pink truffles. That quest sounded like fun, you should have invited me!” (Sofia)

By the way, Anya, exhausted from laughing, is now snuggling against Mew-chan’s belly, completely drained. Thank you for your hard work (Gokurōsamadesu), Anya.

“Oh, by the way, Wil-kun. Why are you at Anya-chan’s house today? Are you done being a shut-in?” (Sofia)

“Please don’t say it like it’s some kind of illness.” (Wilhelm)

“Oh, it wasn’t an illness?” (Sofia)

“It’s just my nature.” (Wilhelm)

Anya chuckled softly. Looks like she’s not completely cured yet.

Sofia-san smiled.

“I’m glad Wil-kun is back. There are lots of quests piled up, so you’ll be working like a horse from tomorrow onwards, right? You’re really reliable.” (Sofia)

“Ah, but I’m definitely going to have muscle soreness tomorrow.” (Wilhelm)

“Aww, this again…? Isn’t this the same situation as last time when you came out of your shut-in phase?” (Sofia)

“Muscle soreness after coming out of shut-in mode is an unavoidable fate. Plus, those Ghost Mountain Cats were stronger than expected.” (Wilhelm)

“Wow… So Ghost Mountain Cats, despite their cute name, are powerful magical beasts. Speaking of ghosts, there have been a lot of them in Heartlick City lately.” (Sofia)

“That’s scary. I hope no children are being taken to the other side.” (Wilhelm)

“Yeah, hopefully.” (Sofia)

Sofia-san made a ghost-like face by lowering her hand and she approached Anya from behind.

“Anya-chan, be sure to watch out so you don’t get abducted by ghosts, okay? Make sure to light a lamp before you go to bed, or else they might snatch you away, you know?” (Sofia)

It was quite a convincing ghost act.

However, since Anya was burying her face in Mew-chan, she didn’t see any of it.

Sofia-san seemed a bit disappointed. But Anya has stopped laughing. She seems fine now.

Sofia-san shifted her gaze to the pot-au-feu that Anya was eating.

“Is this made with pink truffles?” (Sofia)

“Yes, that’s right.” (Wilhelm)

“Anya-chan, I’ll take one too… Huh, there’s no taste? But wow, a sweet aroma is coming out of my nose. This might be an interesting ingredient. Hehehehe. Hahaha! Huh?” (Sofia)

Sofia-san laughed at a strange moment.

Maybe Sofia-san too—Alright, let’s test her.

“Ah, our futon flew away.” (Wilhelm)

“Ahhhhahahahahaha! Wil-kun, please don’t tell such amazing jokes!” (Sofia)

“It’s the worst joke ever…” (Wilhelm)

“Hahahahaha! Hahahahaha! Ahahaha!” (Sofia)

Sofia-san pointed at me and burst into laughter.

Anya lifted her head from Mew-chan’s fluff and gave Sofia-san a stern look.

She seemed to have a mischievous expression on her face.

Was Anya planning to counterattack against Sofia-san? She was wiggling her fingers with a smile on her face.

Sofia-san felt a chill down her spine.

“Oh, Anya-chan. What are you doing? Onee-san is a bit busy right now—” (Sofia)

“The cat rolled over!” (Anya)

“Bwahahahahaha! Ahahahahaha! What’s that? It’s hilarious! Ahahahahaha!” (Sofia)

Anya used tickling attack.

It was super effective against Sofia-san!

“Hey, Anya-chan, no physical attacks, okay? Hahaha! Hahaha! *cough, cough* Hahaha!” (Sofia)

Anya’s tickling attack never stopped and Sofia-san’s smile never faded. Dinner sure is lively today.

By the way, I heard from Frankie-san later that there’s actually a proper cooking method to avoid the laughing side effects. He told me with a smirk on his face so he definitely did not mention this earlier on purpose.

TL Notes:

Thanks for reading!

So MC told Sofia about the pink truffles quest, but not why Anya was laughing her ass off. I’m pretty sure he did this on purpose.

Apparently laughing mushrooms are a thing in the real world…? At least the name exists, but I couldn’t really find anything on whether it actually makes you laugh, so that part must be fiction.

CGM – Vol 2 Chapter 2 Part 1 – The shut-in tastes a delicacy loved by magical beasts

“Get up already, you neet!” (Mew-chan)

“Ugyaaaaaaah!” (Wilhelm)

That startled me.

I was woken up by having my bed flipped over. And of course, the culprit was Mew-chan.

He mercilessly pulled open the curtains in the room. The morning sun was blinding, to say the least.

Haa. The neet still can’t get up on his own mew?” (Mew-chan)

“And Mew-chan still doesn’t know how to wake me up properly. Ouch, ouch, ouch.” (Wilhelm)

I fell out of bed and didn’t manage to break my fall properly, so it hurts a bit. What a rough morning.

“This is as nice as it gets mew.” (Mew-chan)

Mew-chan smirked. He seemed to take joy in annoying me. What a sadist.

“If you want me to wake you up gently, then you better start working seriously mew.” (Mew-chan)

“That’s a tough condition. Oh well…” (Wilhelm)

I yawned as I tried to get up. Ugh, it’s only nine in the morning. It’s not the time for shut-ins to wake up.

I closed the curtains. Fixed the bed back to its original state. Slipped back under the blanket.

“I’m gonna sleep a bit more. Good night~” (Wilhelm)

“Don’t you dare go back to sleep!” (Mew-chan)

“Ugyaaaaaah!” (Wilhelm)

Once again, I was flipped out of bed.

Damn it. Does Mew-chan have no heart? Well, obviously not. After all, he’s a magical beast.

“Hey, Mew-chan, why do we have to get up early today?” (Wilhelm)

“Because it’s sunny. Ojou has already finished her preparation mew.” (Mew-chan)

Oh, right. I remember now.

“Oh, I see. We might be going to a distant mountain today.” (Wilhelm)

I was still half asleep. Oh well. I guess I’ll do my best at work.

I left the house with Anya, who had tied her hair into a ponytail with a cute ribbon.

Under Anya’s guidance, we first arrived at a place nearby called Bones Magic Shop.

The bell on the door made a pleasant sound as we entered.

It was a bit dusty but had a cozy atmosphere.

There were plenty of magical weapons, potions, books, and daily goods infused with magic lining the shelves. The interior of the shop had a somewhat dark atmosphere, giving off the impression that it was frequented by wizards and witches.

However, there was no shopkeeper in sight.

Anya called out what was likely the name of the shop manager toward the back of the store. Someone named Frankie.

A person came rushing out from the back of the shop.

At first glance, he seemed to be around seventy. His short hair was pure white, and his face was wrinkled. However, his eyes sparkled with youthful energy.

“Oh, if it isn’t Ana-chan! Thanks for coming to play. Come on in, come on in. I have some snacks!” (Frankie)

“Hello, Frankie-san. How are your waist and knees?” (Anya)

“Oh, they could be better! Ahahaha!” (Frankie)

Wait. Didn’t he just sprint out here at full speed?

“Frankie-san, please take better care of your body.” (Anya)

“I’d rather cherish the time I spend with Ana-chan.” (Frankie)

What is this guy even saying?

“I’m more worried about Frankie-san’s health than mine.” (Anya)

“Huh? Then, will you give me a massage? Like stepping on my back with your feet.” (Frankie)

What is he saying so confidently…

“That will only worsen your back.” (Anya)

“That’s not true at all…” (Frankie)

Well, it is.

Oh, Frankie-san is looking at me. He seems conflicted.

“Ana-chan, is this lackluster guy your fiancé?” (Frankie)

“Hehe, he’s my future husband.” (Anya)

It seemed like Frankie-san was struck by lightning with that revelation.

“S-Seriously…? Ugh, is this really all there is!” (Frankie)

Ugyaaah! Please don’t say things like that.

The heart of a shut-in is a delicate fragile thing. Please handle it with care.

“Even I’m more handsome, right?” (Frankie)

“That’s not possible.” (Anya)

There was a resounding shock in Frankie-san’s heart. His shoulders slumped dejectedly.

“Mouu, Frankie-san you always like to joke around.” (Anya)

“Ana-chan, please stop… Damn it, I thought I was better than this pathetic guy.” (Frankie)

Frankie-san glanced at me briefly. He let out a deep sigh.

“Um, Frankie-san, I’d like to request the best throat medicine you have.” (Anya)

“The best throat medicine? Ah, that’s impossible because we don’t have the ingredients to make it. It’s the kind of thing where we gather the ingredients after receiving a request.” (Frankie)

“And what are those ingredients?” (Anya)

Frankie-san pondered for a moment, rubbing his chin.

“It’s called a Pink Truffle… It might be dangerous for Ana-chan to go alone. If Ana-chan had sword skills like Mama Angelina, it wouldn’t be a problem.” (Frankie)

“Oh, I’ll be with Anya, so it’s fine, right?” (Wilhelm)

“By the way, I didn’t ask for your name, what is it?” (Frankie)

“It’s Wilhelm Wondersky.” (Wilhelm)

“Ah, Robert’s kid, huh? Are you done being a shut-in?” (Frankie)

“Well, it is as you see. Are you a friend of my father’s?” (Wilhelm)

“Yeah, we drank together the other day. He was seriously considering tampering with the family registry to make the eldest son into the second son. He doesn’t want you to take over the family.” (Frankie)

That old bastard… There’s no way he could do such a thing.

“Well, leaving that aside. I’m strong, so there’s no problem.” (Wilhelm)

“It seems so. By the way, who needs the medicine?” (Frankie)

Anya explained the situation.

The saint of the church had severely hurt her throat recently and the doctor said that curing her would require the best throat medicine around.

Since the saint sings a lot at this time of the year, she wanted to receive treatment as soon as possible.

“Oh, that’s tough. The saint is especially busy at this time of year. Well, if you can bring the ingredients, I can make it in a day. Both of you, do your best.” (Frankie)

Anya and I enthusiastically agreed.

The quest “Get the Best Throat Medicine for the Saint of the Church” has begun. It’s a C-rank quest.

The stage is set here, in a place called Ghost Valley.

During the rainy season, mist always hangs in the air, making it a damp place. It’s full of rare magical beasts and plants, so adventurers often come here seeking rare materials.

The required material for this quest, the Pink Truffle, only grows in this place during this season. It seems to store strong magical power, and when mixed into medicine, it’s said to have powerful effects.

Let’s do our best for the saint.

“Wil-sama, there it is! That must be the Ghost Mountain Cat that Frankie-san told us about!” (Anya)

“You’re right. It looks exactly like as the name suggests.” (Wilhelm)

Floating low amidst the mist, there’s a mountain cat with a ghostly appearance. Its fur is white with black stripes like a tiger. It looks much fiercer than the cats in the town.

Its legs are wriggly like ghosts, but it is standing upright as if it were on two legs. Its hands are pointed downwards, giving it a ghostly appearance.

By the way, this magical beast has a keen sense of smell and has a tendency to dig up buried Pink Truffles in the soil.

According to information from Frankie-san, we need to take the Pink Truffles from its nest… or rather, have it give them to us.

“However, the problem is how to scare it. It seems that when that magical beast gets scared, it gives up its treasure in the nest, in other words, the Pink Truffles. It’s an interesting yet somewhat troublesome creature with its unique behavior.” (Wilhelm)

Now, how do we scare it? Perhaps making a loud noise would work.

“Wil-sama, I have an idea.” (Anya)

Anya puffed out her chest proudly.

Her chest is still small. It seems it will take some time before it starts to sway.

“You seem confident. Well then, let’s see what Anya can do.” (Wilhelm)

“Yes, I’ll do my best!” (Anya)

Anya cutely ran towards the Ghost Mountain Cat. The Ghost Mountain Cat raised its hands high in a threatening pose. How adorable.

“Hello, Ghost Mountain Cat-san. I’m going to scare you~ If I do it well, please give me a Pink Truffle, okay? Now, watch me closely!” (Anya)

What is she going to do? Will she raise her voice?

For some reason, Anya untied her ponytail.

Then, she lowered her head and brought her long hair forward.

Anya’s face was completely hidden by her hair. Can she see anything in front of her like that?

She directed her face, hidden behind her hair, towards the Ghost Mountain Cat.

Ah, I see. That’s the thing adults often do to entertain little kids, right? They cover their face with their hair and say, “I’m a ghost~” to amuse the children.

“Yes, I’m a ghost~. I’m very scary~” (Anya)

Anya lowered her hands like a ghost.

Then, she swayed her body like a ghost.

Ah… how cute…

I can’t stop grinning ear to ear. I want to thank the heavens for allowing me to meet such a cute girl in this lifetime. Thank you, God.

Anya sways back and forth. So cute.

Anya raises her hands high. So cute.

“I’m scary~ I’m really scary~ Right~? Right~? Please be scared~ G-Gao~?” (Anya)

The Ghost Mountain Cat stared at Anya intently. It placed its hand on its chin and seemed to seriously contemplate Anya’s actions.

However, it seemed to have no effect whatsoever.

The Ghost Mountain Cat gave a deliberate, mocking laugh. Then it gave Anya a taunting look as if saying, “Is that all you’ve got? Pfft.”

“Gaaaaaaan!” (Cat)

Anya, shocked and at a loss for words, collapsed on the ground, her knees folding beneath her as she put her hands on the ground.

I went over to Anya’s side. I gently placed my hand on her shoulder.

“Well, Anya, I thought it was pretty cute.” (Wilhelm)

“C-Cute wasn’t what I was going for! I was trying to be scary! Even the neighborhood kids were really scared of me.” (Anya)

I somehow doubt that. Those kids probably think the same deep down. They must think that Anya is cute. Because she really is.

“I won’t give up.” (Anya)

Anya stood up straight, determined. She scooped her hair back with both hands.

“If it comes to this, then I’ll use force like a true adventurer. I’ll make it scared through my display of strength.” (Anya)

“Yeah, I think that’s a good idea.” (Wilhelm)

Anya drew the slender and cute sword she had strapped to her waist. Although she also brought her beloved staff, it seems like she wants to gain more experience with the sword.

“Alright, here I gooo~! Ghost Mountain Cat~!” (Anya)

*hop hop hop*

Anya approached the Ghost Mountain Cat with a series of small jumps.

Huh? What’s with Anya’s weird movements? Is that some trendy move among girls these days?

Hmm… Well, that’s just full of openings. If she keeps jumping like that, she won’t be able to put much force into her attacks or defense.

The Ghost Mountain Cat looked quite bored as it watched Anya.

Closing the distance at about ten times the speed of Anya, it delivered a cat punch, or rather a cat uppercut.

Oh no, she got hit. Well, with all those openings, it was bound to happen.

Anya soared up to the height of the nearby trees.

Kyaaaaaaa!” (Anya)

Nyannn!” (Cat)

As Anya fell, the Ghost Mountain Cat launched her into the air again with another uppercut.

Then, as Anya descended, the Ghost Mountain Cat uppercut her once more.

And again, the Ghost Mountain Cat uppercut her as she fell.

What an aerial combo! Who knew that it could do that?

Well, it’s clearly just toying with Anya at this point. Anya isn’t coming down either. With her limited combat experience, there’s no way she can escape from that combo.

Kyaaaaaaa! Wil-samaaaaaa!” (Anya)

Anya’s eyes are spinning. It’s only a matter of time before her stamina runs out completely.

“Anya, I’m coming!” (Wilhelm)

The Ghost Mountain Cat is ranked C. While it might be strong to Anya, it’s super weak to me.

I leaped up with a speed that the Ghost Mountain Cat couldn’t perceive, rescued Anya princess-carry style, and gently set her down at the base of the tree.

Ah… Ugh… Damn it…

I got a bit too carried away. My muscles are screaming in protest.

Looks like I’m gonna have sore muscles again tomorrow. I should’ve refrained from going all out with the jump, especially since it has been a while since I went out.

But muscle pain won’t hit until tomorrow. If I’m going to get muscle pain anyway, might as well go all out today, right?

“Youuuuuu! You’re the reason I’m gonna have muscle pain!” (Wilhelm)

I decided to take out all my frustration on the magical beast. The Ghost Mountain Cat seems utterly perplexed by what just happened. Ignoring its expression, I give it a belly punch and send it soaring into the sky.

The Ghost Mountain Cat flails around in midair.

“Hahaha! That’s what you get! Don’t think a C-rank monster like you can defeat someone as excellent as me!” (Wilhelm)

With all my frustration packed into my fists— I punch the Ghost Mountain Cat, continuously launching it into the sky.

Jumping from tree to tree, I keep attacking the Ghost Mountain Cat, never letting it touch the ground.

After about twenty combos, the Ghost Mountain Cat’s eyes start spinning.

Ha, easy. I lower the Ghost Mountain Cat to the ground.

It bows its head in surrender. Essentially, it’s admitting defeat to me.

“Seems like even monsters have a culture of bowing down…” (Wilhelm)

“It’s so cute how it curls up with a hunched back.” (Anya)

Indeed, it’s kind of cute.

The Ghost Mountain Cat guides us to its nest. Its nest is located in a thick tree trunk, about a three-minute walk away.

Entering the nest, the Ghost Mountain Cat carefully brings out a large sword with both hands. It then gently offers it to us.

It’s a trait of monsters like the Ghost Mountain Cat to offer important treasures when they feel threatened. So, I guess it’s asking us to forgive it with this sword.

But where did it find such a big sword? Is this really its treasure? It looks quite valuable though.

“Hey, that’s not what I want.” (Wilhelm)

The Ghost Mountain Cat flinches. It crosses its arms and looks down diagonally, thinking. Hmm, it seems to have had a sudden realization.

It goes back to its nest and brings out another treasure.

It offers it to me smoothly. It’s a shady book with a picture of a pretty lady on the cover. It grins mischievously and tries to hand it to me.

“Hey, wait a minute. I don’t need that. Why would a monster consider such a book as a treasure?” (Wilhelm)

It looks utterly shocked. Like, “Aren’t we comrades?” kind of expression. How rude.

Well, I admit, there’s a part of me that’s curious to see what’s inside. But I’ve worked hard and gotten sore muscles for a reason. I won’t lose sight of our original goal.

“Don’t you have something more pink?” (Wilhelm)

As if it understood, the Ghost Mountain Cat clapped its hands.

It returns to its nest and brings something else. I take it and inspect it.

“Wait a minute, aren’t these pink panties for girls? And they look like something a teenager would wear. Sure, they’re pink, but come on. You’ve got quite the taste!” (Wilhelm)

I can’t accept this, especially in front of Anya. It’s not appropriate educationally. I show my disapproval, hoping to return it.

The Ghost Mountain Cat seems puzzled, putting a hand to its chin as it ponders. It starts looking at me, lost in thought.

“Um, could we have the Pink Truffles, please?” (Anya)

The Ghost Mountain Cat flinched and looked straight at me. It was Anya who spoke, not me.

“It’s Pink Truffles. Pi-nk-Truf-fles. A rare delicacy1 buried in the ground.” (Wilhelm)

The Ghost Mountain Cat turned away, sweating profusely. It even started whistling casually. Was it trying to play dumb?

“Well then, let’s see what you have.” (Anya)

Anya walked towards the nest, startling the Ghost Mountain Cat.

“Nya! Nyan!” (Cat)

The Ghost Mountain Cat desperately tried to grab onto Anya’s skirt to stop her.

“Ah, don’t grab my skirt! Wil-same might see my panties!” (Anya)

That’s it, keep going!

“Nyaa! Nyan Nyaaa!” (Cat)

Almost there, just a bit more. Yes, that’s it, you can do it, Ghost Mountain Cat. Don’t give up, Ghost Mountain Cat. For my sake.

“Eek! No, stop it! I said no!” (Anya)

Oh, wow, ohh…

Well done, Ghost Mountain Cat. Thank you. I won’t forget this favor.

“If you give us the Pink Truffles, then I won’t enter the nest. So please, let go.” (Anya)

The magical beast seems to understand what she is saying.

With a heavy sigh, the Ghost Mountain Cat released its grip on the skirt and slumped its shoulders before heading into the nest.

Anya’s face turned bright red. With teary eyes, she glanced at me for a moment.

“Did… you… see…?” (Anya)

“Unfortunately, I didn’t see anything.” (Wilhelm)

“Well, that’s a relief. I thought today’s black lace panties were a bit too mature for me.” (Anya)

“Huh? They were pink checkered ones, weren’t they? It was super cute— Uh, whoops.” (Wilhelm)

Anya gave me a stern look.

“Wil-sama, ecchi desu.” (Anya)

“No, that’s not it, Anya!” (Wilhelm)

The Ghost Mountain Cat returned from the nest.

“Nyaa…” (Cat)

While looking incredibly reluctant, the Ghost Mountain Cat held out a bunch of pink, round objects in both arms.

Oh, good timing!

“Wil-sama, I’m sure these are the Pink Truffles!” (Anya)

“Yup, it is. We did it, Anya!” (Wilhelm)

With that, the quest was complete. We high-fived each other. The topic of panties was behind us. Victory!

“As expected of Wil-sama! Being able to complete a C-rank quest so easily!” (Anya)

We shamelessly took all the dozens of Pink Truffles.

The Ghost Mountain Cat looked sad.

Pink Truffles seem to be the favorite food of the Ghost Mountain Cat, so maybe it’ll find more in the soil.

Huh? Anya seems to be rummaging through her backpack. She hands something to the Ghost Mountain Cat.

“If you’d like, please have these. They’re my homemade cookies.” (Anya)

The Ghost Mountain Cat adeptly unwraps the paper package to find plenty of cookies inside.

But the Ghost Mountain Cat looks uninterested.

With a bored expression, it takes just one cookie and puts it in its mouth.

Suddenly, the Ghost Mountain Cat’s eyes widen. It presses its paw to its mouth, surprised. It seems like it enjoyed it.

As expected of Anya. A happy ending indeed.

“By the way, Anya, do you have any cookies for me?” (Wilhelm)

“I’ll make some more for you later.” (Anya)

That’s disappointing… I wanted to have some of Anya’s homemade cookies too.

I’m sure she made them as a snack for me. Oh well…

TL Notes:

Thanks for reading!

Cat clearly played smash bros or something to be able to combo that much.

Apparently, ghosts can make physical contact with things. Maybe it only got its name cause it looks like a ghost but the characteristics are of a tangible being.

If you still can’t picture what the cat looks like, just imagine a cat on two legs and its lower body is the squiggly bit of a ghost.

Footnote:

  1. Apparently, delicacy can also mean something rare or luxurious, often a food item that is considered highly desirable. The only term of delicacy I ever see used, is the ‘don’t you have any delicacy?’ thing that you see in stories.

CGM – Vol 2 Chapter 1 – The shut-in meets a beautiful girl who is good at cooking again

When I arrived at [Grand Bahamut], my jacket and pants were already drenched. It was raining heavily, like a downpour.

Ah, just seeing the appearance of the guild brings back memories. It’s a seasoned two-story house where I used to live until recently.

As per my father’s instructions, I’m back here to work again. It seems like he has already informed [Grand Bahamut].

I went around to the back door but I noticed something different from before. There was a lamp by the door. It’s a traditional event in the city to put out lamps at this time of year.

At night, lamps are lit in houses all over the place. By doing so, the city becomes indescribably beautiful at night.

Lamps come in various shapes depending on the house, but the ones here are round and cute.

It’s been a while, so I knocked before opening the door.

Although I hesitated for just a moment about greeting—

“I’m back!” (Wilhelm)

I decided to say it anyways. It’s been a while, but this place is like a second home to me.

On the other side of the door was a big, fluffy white magical beast. The magical beast’s name is Sodane Mew, aka Mew-chan. It feels really nostalgic.

Mew-chan made a disgusted face like it had seen something gross while approaching me.

“Oh, the newspaper’s here on time mew.” (Mew-chan)

Mew-chan nudged me a bit and closed the door. Hey, come on.

I opened the door.

“I’m back!” (Wilhelm)

Mew-chan looked annoyed.

“If it’s milk delivery, we didn’t order any mew!” (Mew-chan)

Mew-chan tried to close the door. I put my body between the door and resisted. Mew-chan tried to push me out, but I wouldn’t give in.

“I’m. Back.” (Wilhelm)

“We didn’t order any children products either mew!” (Mew-chan)

“It’s me. Me. Be more pleased, Mew-chan.” (Wilhelm)

“This. Guy.” (Mew-chan)

“Do you remember me? It’s been a while!” (Wilhelm)

“You selfishly left, and now you have the nerve to come back? Get lost already!” (Mew-chan)

Mew-chan brought its intimidating face closer. Unfortunately, it’s not scary. It’s cute.

“Oh, right. My bad. But I’m back now!” (Wilhelm)

“Psh. Even though I made such a scary face, you’re brushing it off so casually mew!” (Mew-chan)

“Mew-chan, who is it?” (Anya)

A girl peeked out from under Mew-chan’s arm.

It’s Anastasia Milkyway, the cute guildmaster of [Grand Bahamut], with silver-white hair. I call her Anya.

“Wow, it’s Wil-sama! Welcome back!” (Anya)

Her crimson eyes sparkled, and a smile bloomed on her face.

This is it, this is [Grand Bahamut].

“I’m back, Anya. I look forward to being taken care of by you again!” (Wilhelm)

“Yes, leave it to me!” (Anya)

“Ugh, do you have to take care of someone like him?” (Mew-chan)

“Wil-sama… You’re really soaked.” (Anya)

“I gave my umbrella to someone earlier. Sorry, do you have a towel?” (Wilhelm)

“Ah, Wil-sama, the bath is ready, so please go ahead and use it. I’ll bring your change of clothes from upstairs.” (Anya)

Anya trotted upstairs while I silently thanked her back.

It was just me and Mew-chan now. Our gazes met with a click.

Mew-chan turned its back.

“Fuu, well, whatever mew.” (Mew-chan)

“Huh, did something happen again?” (Wilhelm)

I was allowed inside.

There’s a large sword leaning against the table. Whose could it be? It didn’t seem like the kind of sword Anya would use.

“You should ask the ojou directly, mew. It’s a different situation from before.” (Mew-chan)

Before, it was on the verge of bankruptcy. It doesn’t seem to be that serious this time.

“Whose sword is this? Mew-chan’s?” (Wilhelm)

“It’s Ojou’s dad, George’s. She’s determined to become a full-fledged person by being able to wield this big sword.” (Mew-chan)

“…Even adult men would find it difficult to handle this big sword. Isn’t it still too much for Anya?” (Wilhelm)

“Even so, the time for parting will come soon mew.” (Mew-chan)

“Ah, I see. A lantern send-off. The day will come when we send Anya’s dad’s soul to heaven.” (Wilhelm)

“That’s right mew.” (Mew-chan)

Anya’s father passed away last year.

His body rests in the grave, while his soul will be placed on a lantern and sent from the sea to heaven. The day for this send-off shouldn’t be too far away.

Anya probably wants to show her dad’s soul a grown-up version of herself before saying goodbye. What a brave and admirable girl.

“Wil-sama, I’ll leave your change of clothes here.” (Anya)

“Ah, thank you!” (Wilhelm)

When I entered the bath, it was filled with Anya’s scent. She probably had taken a bath a little while ago.

“Could it be that Anya got caught in the rain too?” (Wilhelm)

“Yes, it was a really heavy rain.” (Anya)

Too bad… If I had come here a little earlier, maybe we could have bathed together. I wished I could have had her wash my back.

After I got out of the bath,

Anya had made some hot cocoa for me.

She poured it carefully into a ceramic cup for me.

“Wil-sama, please enjoy the cocoa. It’ll warm you up.” (Anya)

“Thank you, Anya.” (Wilhelm)

I decided to drink it at the kitchen table.

Cocoa was originally a luxurious drink reserved for kings and nobility. But now it’s becoming popular among commoners.

It’s a bit pricier than coffee, but it’s sweeter and easier to drink, which makes it quite popular.

When I tasted it, there was a delicious warmth that spread through my body from the inside out.

Cocoa has a high heat retention effect, making it perfect for preventing colds.

“Ah, this is good.” (Wilhelm)

It feels like Anya’s warmth is being conveyed to me as the drink seeps into my cold heart and body.

“Being able to drink something this good… I’m glad I got out once in a while.” (Wilhelm)

“Wil-sama seems to have graduated from being a shut-in. That’s very admirable.” (Anya)

“Anya, you’re admirable too. Weren’t you working despite the rain?” (Wilhelm)

“That’s right! She isn’t a Neet unlike you!” (Mew-chan)

“I haven’t done anything remarkable. I just went to the church to receive some work.” (Anya)

“Oh, so now we’re getting jobs from big organizations like the church?” (Wilhelm)

“Yes, the amount of work has been increasing lately. By the way, there’s something I’d like you to see, Wil-sama.” (Anya)

I wonder what it is. Anya got up and went somewhere. Not long later, she returned with something in her hand.

Anya was holding a stack of documents. She carefully placed them in the middle of the table.

She looked proud.

“We’ve been getting a lot of work done smoothly for the past two weeks. Because of that, [Grand Bahamut] is gradually picking up!” (Anya)

“That’s a lot of work. It feels like a dream compared to how things were just a little while ago.” (Wilhelm)

Before, it was as quiet as a graveyard.

“I’m sure it’s because we won the guild competition during the Spring Festival. Thanks to that, [Grand Bahamut]’s reputation has improved. In other words, the increase in work is all thanks to Wil-sama, who guided me back then!” (Anya)

I see. It was during the guild competition at the Spring Festival.

Certainly, I guided Anya to win at that time.

Anya was someone I raised and I’m proud that my efforts back then have borne fruit.

“Haha, with someone as excellent as me guiding you, achieving these results is easy.” (Wilhelm)

“Yes, indeed. Wil-sama, I’m truly grateful.” (Anya)

I’m glad. Mhmm, it was good that I worked hard back then.

I took another sip of the cocoa. Delicious.

Even the chance to drink this cocoa is because of the effort I put in back then. When I was here before, cocoa was never served.

The fact that Anya can afford to serve cocoa is evidence that her life has become more comfortable. Although, cocoa is still a bit expensive.

Hmm, but Anya’s expression seems a bit cloudy today… Maybe she’s having trouble with something else this time.

Come to think of it, didn’t Mew-chan mention something?

It’s not good to keep things bottled up. Let’s ask.

“Anya, is there something troubling you?” (Wilhelm)

“Um, well… It’s really embarrassing to talk about…” (Anya)

“You can tell me anything. That’s why I’m here. I’ll support you properly, Anya.” (Wilhelm)

Anya hesitated for a moment. Then she started speaking.

“The thing is, because of the increase in work… Even though it’s a good thing, we’re now getting requests that are more difficult than before. Specifically, requests with a difficulty level of C-rank or higher. I’m finding it really difficult to handle them…” (Anya)

I see. Anya can only handle things like herb gathering and simple quests. Even the other guild member, Sofia-san, could only handle tasks up to D rank.

“Anya, then you don’t need to worry about a thing. I’ll take care of all the high-difficulty quests for you.” (Wilhelm)

Anya’s expression brightened.

“Really? That’s very kind of you. But if it’s alright with you, could you teach me as well?” (Anya)

“Teach you? About what?” (Wilhelm)

“I’m the guild master, so I want to be able to handle more difficult quests. I thought it would be great if Wil-sama could teach me how to handle the difficult quests.” (Anya)

“I see. Alright, that sounds good. Indeed, a guild master needs to be able to handle any quest. I’ll support you as much as I can, Anya.” (Wilhelm)

She showed me a smile as if a spring flower had bloomed. Cute. Anya’s smile is really lovely.

“Thank you so much! Then, let’s start…” (Anya)

“Sodane. But wait mew. It’s raining today, so leave those plans for tomorrow mew.” (Mew-chan)

Indeed. Terrains on rainy days can be dangerous.

The damp paths are slippery and can increase the risk of falling. Going out in such weather can also drain you’re stamina. Plus, it’s harder to sense the presence of magical beasts when raining.

So, it’s better not to go on quests on rainy days unless it’s an emergency.

“Mew-chan’s right. Since it’s raining like this today, let’s do it tomorrow.” (Wilhelm)

“Yes. I’ll count on you tomorrow.” (Anya)

Today, I decided to spend my time leisurely with Anya.

We talked for hours about what happened while I was away.

Later in the evening, Anya started cooking.

With a cute apron on, Anya was beyond adorable. Singing and talking to the vegetables only added to her immense cuteness.

I want to keep watching. That cute butt, I mean, the adorable Anya.

…Huh. There’s a bluish fluorescent glow outside the window.

The lower half is wiggly. The upper half is humanoid.

It must be a ghost. It waved its hand from outside the window.

Is it trying to take Anya away? The ghost is semi-materialized, so it has a face. It’s a simple face with just eyes and a mouth.

It pressed its face against the window. Is it trying to enter the house and snatch a child, or just trying to startle someone?

Anya noticed the ghost. She looked at the window and flinched.

“Eek!” (Anya)

She let out a small scream. It was a cute voice.

“Wil-sama, Wil-sama!” (Anya)

Anya came running over at lightning speed and hid behind my back.

“Haha, it seems Anya is scared of ghosts.” (Wilhelm)

“I-I’m not scared! I’m not that much of a child!” (Anya)

“You’re acting just like Clara.” (Wilhelm)

“I-I’m not a tsundere!” (Anya)

The ghost chuckled satisfactorily. It must have been pleased that Anya got scared.

It seems like the ghost just wanted to scare Anya rather than abduct her. Scaring people is the essence of being a ghost, after all.

“Oh, right. The lamp. Mew-chan, can you come here for a moment?” (Anya)

Anya called for Mew-chan, who was cleaning my room upstairs. She responded with “sodane”.

“Could you light up the outdoor lamp for me?” (Anya)

Again, she responded with “sodane.”

Anya probably finds it scary to go outside and light the lamp herself. If the ghost is of that strength, it can’t really snatch children anyway.

I could hear Mew-chan hurriedly cleaning with a “myu myu myu” sound. Then, Mew-chan came rushing into the kitchen.

“Come to think of it, even a neet like you could at least light up the lamp, right mew?” (Mew-chan)

“Yeah, if you think about it, you’re right. Well, Mew-chan, go do you’re thing.” (Wilhelm)

“Sodane. If you understand, then go do it yourself next time. You really are lazy mew. Just as expected from a neet.” (Mew-chan)

Mew-chan held a magic match and opened the back door to go outside. The lamp was hung on that door.

By the way, a magic match is an economically convenient tool that can ignite multiple times with a single stick.

Oh, come to think of it, is it safe for Mew-chan to handle fire? Her whole body is fluffy. Her fur might catch fire, but…

“Ahhh, it’s hot mew!” (Mew-chan)

Just as I thought… Sorry about that…

I stepped out to check on Mew-chan. Looks like he had dampened his hands with the rain.

“Are you okay? Did your hand get burnt?” (Wilhelm)

Mew-chan looked extremely embarrassed.

“Heh, not so weak that a neet like you need to worry about me mew.” (Mew-chan)

Guess she’s fine then.

The lamp’s flame was burning steadily.

I saw the ghost fly off somewhere.

As I returned back inside with Mew-chan, Anya let out a sigh of relief.

After a while, dinner was ready.

Anya had prepared beautifully fried croquettes. They were accompanied by a mountain of shredded cabbage, tempting my appetite to its limits.

The pumpkin soup also looked delicious.

Anya placed a plate neatly in front of me. The aroma alone was already delightful. Perhaps it was the affection put into the cooking that made the dishes shine so much.

“Now, Wil-sama, please enjoy it to your heart’s content.” (Anya)

“Ah, I’ll savor every bite! I’ve been looking forward to Anya’s homemade dishes!” (Wilhelm)

I poured Anya’s special sauce over the croquettes and took a bite right away.

“Wow, these are amazing! They’re so fluffy and warm. The depth of flavor from the potatoes is incredible. I could eat these all day!” (Wilhelm)

The coating is crispy and the sauce is rich. The croquette and sauce blend perfectly together on my tongue. It’s a hundred out of a hundred in terms of deliciousness.”

“It’s seriously amazing. You’re incredible, Anya! You’re a cooking genius! You’re even better than a pro!” (Wilhelm)

“You’re too kind.” (Anya)

This is it. This love-filled dish made by Anya is what gives me the motivation to keep going. It’s my vitality for living.

Hmm… Thinking back on the past month and a half of my shut-in life, I feel a few tears welling up. Our meals at home became increasingly devoid of love day by day.

Like when I was served “beef steak” and it turned out to be just vegetables on the plate. That was my father’s doing. It was truly a loveless household.

“Ugh. It’s gross to see a shut-in like you shedding tears mew.” (Mew-chan)

“Don’t say it’s gross. You know, humans tend to get all emotional when they eat warm food. It’s like the tension just melts away, and tears start flowing.” (Wilhelm)

A magical beast like you wouldn’t understand, though.

“Mew? How does a shut-in like you even manage to feel any tension?” (Mew-chan)

The beast hits right where it hurts.

“W-Well, shut-ins have their own struggles, you know.” (Wilhelm)

“You’re just eating and sleeping all day…” (Mew-chan)

“The amount of pressure you have to deal with is tough, you know?” (Wilhelm)

“Well, that’s just how it is mew. If you don’t like people treating you like that, then go get a job, you neet.” (Mew-chan)

Mew-chan is harsh.

But the taste of this dish is gentle. So, I decided to focus on the food instead.

Ah, delicious! The soup seeps deep into my stomach and heart.

Anya picks up her own croquette with a fork and brings it towards my mouth.

“Wil-sama, here you go, ahh…” (Anya)

She’s like a saint. She radiates maternal warmth. There’s no mistaking it.

Anya is starting to look like a real mother. What a warm-hearted girl. I want a mother like her. No, I want her to be my mother. Wait, what am I thinking? Anya is only twelve years old.

Well, I’ll play along.

“Ahh…” (Wilhelm)

With a bit of embarrassment, I let her feed me. It somehow made the food taste a hundred times better.

“This is amazing. It somehow tastes better. But why did you want to feed me like that?” (Wilhelm)

“I thought it would cheer Wil-sama up… Was it not good?” (Anya)

“Nope, it totally cheered me up!” (Wilhelm)

“That’s great to hear! There’s still plenty of croquettes left, so please eat as much as you want!” (Anya)

“Alright! I’ll eat as much as I can!” (Wilhelm)

Anya’s cooking kind of reminds me of my mother’s. That’s how delicious it was.

TL Notes:

Thanks for reading!

Oh, ghosts really do exist in their world. I thought it was someone in the window who looked like a ghost but apparently, it’s a real one.

Also, I didn’t know that Anya knew that Clara was a tsundere xD

  1. Halberd is a two-handed polearm with an axe blade at the end. Just imagine a spear but with an axe head.

CGM – Vol 2 Prologue

I, Wilhelm Wondersky, am a shut-in.

I named my bedroom “Paradise” and lived a lazy life within it.

Not too long ago, I was vigorously completing quests for a guild on the verge of collapse. In the end, I managed to earn a lot of money and even saved the city by driving away an ancient magical beast that nobody else could defeat.

Back then, I was on a roll.

But now…

Ouch. Ouch, ouch, ouch. My past self was so full of energy. Just remembering it makes me cringe and uncomfortable.

Now my spirits are super low and I’m back to being a shut-in.

Huh? How did it come to this?

Well, you see, it’s because suspicions about me being the “Demon King” resurfaced.

There was a feature article in the newspaper titled “Is Wilhelm Wondersky Really the Demon King?” It talked about how the Demon King was a bad guy who wreaked havoc in ancient times.

The trigger for this article was when I drove away the ancient beast. As it turns out, in the past, the Demon King also drove away ancient beasts like I did.

It’s such a nuisance of an article. Because of that article, the way people treat me changed.

Whispers start when I walk down the street.

Kids point fingers and make fun of me. They suddenly kick me as if they’re heroes. Everyone looks at me with amusement and laughs.

As a result, my pure fragile heart was hurt and shattered into pieces. It’s beyond repair now.

Since it seemed like staying in the guild would lead to more rumors, I decided to shut myself in at my parents’ house.

Hehehe, now that I’m a shut-in, I won’t let anyone disturb this lifestyle.

As usual, I’ve put a strong magical lock on the door. Only the servants I allow are permitted to enter my room.

Furthermore, the only heirloom sword capable of breaking my sealing magic is in my possession. So there’s no way that noisy father of mine can find a single means to enter this room.

In other words, I can continue to be a shut-in in this room indefinitely.

“Ah, this is amazing. The life of a shut-in is wonderful!” (Wilhelm)

Ahahaha. Ahahahaha. I can’t stop laughing. I absolutely won’t leave this paradise anymore.

I poured some cold, thin tea down my throat.

Hmm, the taste of high-quality tea… I can’t taste it at all. It’s almost transparent in color. I’m sure I asked the butler for warm and delicious tea. Hmm…

I try pouring the tea down my throat again.

“No, this is just water, isn’t it? There’s absolutely no scent of tea leaves at all!” (Wilhelm)

I’ve been had. I thought they brought me some tea.

It’s probably just my father’s way of annoying me.

How pointless. With such trivial pranks, I will never yield.

I’m going to spend my life here, in this bed, no, in this paradise!

I woke up around noon.

“Huh, that’s unusual. It’s sunny today.” (Wilhelm)

It’s been a month and a half since I started being a shut-in. The season has already transitioned from spring to the rainy season.

It’s been raining constantly. It feels refreshing to see the sun again after so long.

Well, whether it’s rainy or sunny doesn’t matter for a shut-in like me. After all, I don’t go outside.

“It’s such nice weather. Maybe I’ll go back to sleep for a bit.” (Wilhelm)

Let’s do that. That sounds good.

I sink back into the swamp of sleep…

Ah, the blissful shut-in life. It’s fine to sleep as much as I want. There’s no happiness like this anywhere else. Shut-ins have a happiness that workers can never experience. I have no intention of ever giving up this shut-in life.

It was the moment when I started to have happy dreams.

“Aaaaaaaaaah!” (Robert)

I felt like I heard my father’s voice coming from the roof or something.

Was that my imagination? Why is my father yelling from the roof? Is he trying to fix a leak while it’s sunny? He should just hire a professional.

“Aaaaaaaaaaaah!” (Robert)

Huh? Is my father’s voice getting closer?

“Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!” (Robert)

What’s going on? I hear my father’s voice from outside the window…

“Dosseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeei!” (Robert)

Crash! The window glass shattered loudly!

Eeeeeeeeeeh?! My father just kicked in the window and entered the room! Is there something wrong with his head?!

It seems like he set up a rope on the roof and swung down from there. Just to enter my room through the window.

Unbelievable. Is he crazy? Sure, there’s no sealing magic on the window, but this is beyond absurd.

My father showed a creepy grin.

“Heh, hahahaha. Finally… we meet at last. Huh? Um, hmm, wait, what was your name again?” (Robert)

“Hey, I’m Wilhelm. Have you finally lost it?” (Wilhelm)

“Who’s losing it? It’s just been so long since I’ve seen your face, I genuinely forgot.” (Robert)

“That’s what they call losing it.” (Wilhelm)

“Don’t know what you’re talking about. I still remember Tony!” (Robert)

Tony is my brother. He’s a talented and handsome guy.

“Father, please love your sons equally.” (Wilhelm)

“Huh? How dare you say you’re brothers with Tony!” (Robert)

“But we are real brothers.” (Wilhelm)

“Shut it, you filthy shut-in!” (Robert)

“I’m not filthy! I do take baths when you’re asleep!” (Robert)

Haaa.

I reluctantly got out of bed.

My father approaches me. And he’s holding a halberd1 and aiming it at me.

“So, Father, what brings you here today?” (Wilhelm)

“Well, you see, the other day, I was finally told by my colleagues at work.” (Robert)

My father clenched his fists so tightly that his eyes squinted with frustration.

“What did they say?” (Wilhelm)

“They said… isn’t your eldest son a shut-in? Pfff… Pffffft—and then they laughed at me. They said Pfff twice. That annoyed the hell out of me!” (Robert)

“Um, would it be better with just one ‘pfff’?” (Wilhelm)

There was a sharp snap sound as something in my father snapped.

“Alright, that’s a good comeback. Let that be your last words. Die right here, right now!” (Robert)

“Aaaargh! I’m the esteemed eldest son of the Wondersky family! If I die, Father, you’ll have all sorts of problems!” (Wilhelm)

The halberd swung down. I narrowly avoided it.

My bed had been damaged.

“Aaaaaahhhhhh! My paradise!” (Wilhelm)

“Hahaha, serves you right!” (Robert)

“Don’t take pleasure in your son’s misfortune!” (Wilhelm)

“Haha, that’s unfortunate! I feel so alive right now. I can finally get rid of my sleep deprivation!” (Robert)

“You were sleep-deprived?!” (Wilhelm)

“I’ve been agonizing over how to kick you out of the house!” (Robert)

“Then don’t do it!” (Wilhelm)

“No hard feelings but… it must be doneee!!” (Robert)

Ah, I’ll have to tell the butler to fix the bed later.

And seriously, my father won’t stop attacking with the halberd.

*Dodge, dodge, dodge*

Oh, it’s hard to move when I’ve just woken up. I might get hit the moment I let my guard down. Scary!

“Father, father, I’m still half asleep and feeling sluggish. I might not be able to dodge it. If I get hit, I’ll die!” (Wilhelm)

“Isn’t that good? If you get hit, we can some money on food expenses!” (Robert)

“Don’t be happy about that! You never even prepared decent meals!” (Wilhelm)

Almost-rotten bread, half-eaten vegetables, and slightly burnt soup.

The quality of meals deteriorated day by day. He must have been trying to make me fed up with my shut-in life. What a conniving father.

“Don’t you think you should be grateful that you even get food to eat? You’re an adult Neet, for crying out loud!” (Robert)

He swung the halberd vigorously.

I jumped up and fled to the wall.

My father chased after me and thrust the halberd into the wall just as I narrowly escaped.

A wall slam with a halberd. But since it’s my father, and his eyes are bloodshot, it’s not exactly heartwarming.

“So, in order to save on food expenses, just die. With that saved money, I’ll drink some good wine!” (Robert)

What a parent.

“P-Please give me a chance. It’s not like you to lack compassion, Father.” (Wilhelm)

“A chance? Are you still blabbering about wanting to live? Despite being a shut-in?” (Robert)

“Of course, I want to live. If I die here, I’ll come back as a ghost and haunt you.” (Wilhelm)

“I’d laugh if you came back as a ghost. I’ll douse you in salt and purify you.” (Robert)

Hahahaha—My father laughed.

“…But well, that’s right. I am the most compassionate man in town.” (Robert)

All lies.

“So, I’ll give you one chance. Then—” (Robert)

My father smiled broadly, his face relaxed as if relieved of stress.

When I changed and stepped outside, it started to rain.

“Wil-sama, it might be wise to take an umbrella.” (Richard)

Richard, the tall, white-haired butler, handed me a large umbrella. I thanked him.

“Hohoho, looks like the weather isn’t so welcoming of Wil-sama’s fresh start, isn’t it?” (Richard)

“Maybe my mood influenced the weather.” (Wilhelm)

It was a gloomy and dark cloud. It felt like something unpleasant was about to happen.

“Wil-sama, the rainy season has fully set in. Please be careful not to be taken away by ghosts at night. Please take care.” (Richard)

So, ghosts come out during the rainy season.

A flash of lightning illuminated Richard’s face, making it look eerie. It seemed like an omen that something scary was about to happen. Thunder rumbled ominously.

“Richard used to scare me like this when I was a kid.” (Wilhelm)

“Hohoho, compared to other children, Wil-sama wasn’t scared at all though.” (Richard)

So that’s why Richard used to try so hard to scare me. He would do things like chase me with a sheet over his head. Those were some good memories from my childhood.

“Well then, I’m off. Thanks for seeing me off.” (Wilhelm)

“Yes. I pray for a bright and glorious future ahead for Wil-sama’s journey.” (Richard)

I walked slowly through the heavy rain, listening to the sound of raindrops hitting the umbrella.

The air outside feels nostalgic. Even the sensation of walking down the street feels nostalgic. It’s been a long time since my shoes got wet in the rain.

I walked down the quiet residential street. There don’t seem to be a lot of people hanging around at this time of the day.

Wait… A girl is getting wet in the rain.

She’s wearing a dark navy dress and it’s oddly tattered. There are stitches on the dress that were used to cover the large tears.

The girl has long jet-black hair covering her eyes. She looks like a ghost or a spirit. Why is she standing there absent-mindedly getting wet in the rain?

…Ah, I see. She’s been watching a black cat. The cat seems to have spotted a frog and is about to pounce.

The girl’s hair and clothes are getting wetter and wetter. It wouldn’t be gentlemanly to just pass by like this.

“Here, please use this umbrella.” (Wilhelm)

I hand the umbrella to the girl, hidden behind her long sleeves.

“Um, I’m fine, you know?” (Girl)

Her voice, which was gently echoing in my ears, was beautiful. She’s probably three or four years younger than me.

“It’s okay. Just take it. You don’t have to worry too much about me.” (Wilhelm)

The girl nodded while the black cat meowed, thanking me.

I continued down the road without looking back.

Let’s leave with style. It feels good to do nice things, once in a while. I had a strong feeling that something good was going to happen from now on.

Ah, there’s a hood attached to my jacket. If I pull it over, at least, I won’t get too wet in the rain.

“Onii-san.” (Girl)

The girl’s voice slipped through the gaps in the sound of the rain and reached my ears.

I stopped and turned around. Lightning flashed nearby.

The girl was looking at me with vacant eyes. Her mouth curved into a smile, giving off an eerie vibe.

“I think something very bad will happen near onii-san in the not-so-distant future. So be careful, okay? Kekeke… Kekekekeke…” (Girl)

She covered her mouth with the hand hidden in her sleeve and laughed creepily.

She has quite an unusual way of laughing.

“Something bad?” (Wilhelm)

“Yes, something bad. Something very, very bad…” (Girl)

The lightning cast an eerie light on the girl’s face. It felt like a scene from a horror movie. Her laughter echoed in my ears, adding to the ominous atmosphere.

The black cat, perhaps bored of the frog, approached me.

It stared at me for a moment, then smirked. And then it walked across my path.

The black cat crossing my path… That’s ominous.

The girl and the black cat walked away.

That girl left quite an impression. She seemed to have a presence that was, how should I put it, faint, almost like she came from another world…

“Could it be, that girl was a ghost?” (Wilhelm)

That thought sent shivers down my spine. The rainy season is said to be the time when ghosts come from the other world.

I was taught since childhood that if you do bad things, ghosts will take you away. But I don’t think I’m a bad person…

The rain kept getting heavier.

“Something bad will happen in the near future huh?” (Wilhelm)

I pondered while getting soaked in the rain. Maybe I shouldn’t have offered her my umbrella.

I was hoping that something good would come my way.

Illustration of the ominous girl (actually there are two illustrations lol)

TL Notes:

Thanks for reading!

Yes, there are more lolis but you probably already see it coming from the cover illustration. Well, she looks like an interesting character. Maybe she’s a witch or something since there’s the black cat. It wasn’t mentioned if the cat was hers, but I’m sure we’ll see it again.

Footnote:

  1. Halberd is a two-handed polearm with an axe blade at the end. Just imagine a spear but with an axe head.
